A pair of ruined sneakers for a modest €1,750, a bag in the shape of a bag of Lay's chips: we often see eye-catching fashion items come by from Balenciaga. This fashion item, however, takes the crown, or rather the nugget....
The Point Toe Clogs, made in Italy, showcase Balenciaga's take on the classic footwear known to us as the clog. However, the modern slip-ons differ from the classic version. In fact, the Spanish fashion house decided to make the clog out of hard plastic with a coating that mimics the look of wood.

Contrary to what it might suggest, the clog has its origins in France. From the Atlantic to the North Sea, from Spain to the Scandinavian countries, the wooden shoe was very popular in the Middle Ages. Leather shoes were in fact unaffordable for the poorer part of the population. Wooden clogs were the solution. Fun fact: the oldest wooden shoe in the world dates back to 1230 and was found on the Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam.
The wooden shoe seems to be finding its way back, only this time the roles are reversed. The Balenciaga version does come with a hefty price tag. The clogs cost a small € 1.200.
