These are the most expensive tiaras of the royal family

With King's Day approaching, where the royal family visits Emmen, MASTERS takes a look at the diamond-covered tiaras of our royals. Máxima, Beatrix and Amalia are regularly spotted with it, but how much does something like that cost? These are the most expensive tiaras (and jewels) of the Dutch royal family.

First things first. There are rules. A tiara is only worn by a woman (by marriage) from the royal family from the age of eighteen. A royal family member by marriage will therefore only be allowed to wear her first tiara during her wedding. The tiara may also only be put on after five o'clock. With one exception, namely a wedding. Then a tiara may be worn earlier in the day. In some royal families, a tiara or piece of jewelry is loaned to only one person, who owns it for their entire life. In the Netherlands there is often a permanent carrier, but it is occasionally loaned to another royal member.

Jewelerybox examined the most expensive royal jewelry worldwide, looking at the tiaras, necklaces and rings of royal families around the world and their estimated value. The Netherlands appears three times in the 46-count ranking: in places 14, 16 and 21. Owners of these positions? Queen Maxima, Princess Beatrix and Queen Juliana. These are the three most expensive tiaras (jewels) in the Netherlands.

3. Princess Beatrix's Württemberg tiara: €4,7 million

This tiara was made for Wilhelmina, a year before her inauguration as queen. In addition to diamonds, the tiara contains 50 round pearls and 11 pear-shaped pearls can be mounted on it. Beatrix made this tiara best known and introduced it during her wedding to Prince Claus and later also wore it regularly as queen. Queen Máxima also wore the tiara several times.

2. Dutch Star tiara from Queen Máxima: €5,8 million

Màxima wore this tiara for the first time during her wedding in 2002. After she wore it a number of times, it temporarily disappeared into the safe. He was spotted again for the first time in 2013.

For a long time, Queen Máxima was the only one to wear the tiara, but in 2014 the tiara was loaned to Princess Margriet. In 2022, Amalia chose this tiara for her tiara debut, at the birthday party of Norwegian Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

1. Queen Juliana's Rose Cut Diamond Bandeau Tiara: €6,9 million

This tiara (also called bandeau because of its simple shape) consists entirely of 27 diamond stones in different sizes. The diamonds were given to Queen Emma for her wedding to William III in 1879. Officially the bandeau was part of a necklace, but Emma's daughter Wilhelmina turned it into a bandeau in 1937.

However, Queen Wilhelmina was never seen with it. Only in her last official portrait, before she abdicated for her daughter Juliana, do we see her wearing the bandeau. After her death, Juliana inherited the bandeau and wore it regularly. As well as Beatrix, Margriet and Christina. Nowadays we see Queen Máxima wear the tiara regularly and it even seems to be the favorite tiara of our queen.

And the most expensive jewel of all the royal families in the world?

At number 1 on the list is Kate Middleton's Nizam of Hyderabad necklace, worth a whopping €77,3 million. In 2014, Kate made her first appearance wearing the necklace at a gathering at the National Portrait Gallery. The Nizam of Hyderabad gave the jewel to Queen Elizabeth – then a princess – as a wedding gift in 1947. He was considered one of the richest men in the world at the time and let her choose from the entire Cartier collection. She chose a floral tiara and a matching floral necklace. Which she later gave to Princess Kate.

We previously wrote about the impressive value of the coronation crowns of King Charles III and Camilla, so there's plenty of pricey jewelry in the British royal family. Also considering that the first four places in the survey are occupied by the British royals. Total value of these top 4? €176,3 million.
