She studied at the Design Academy, but then went out into the wide world with her boyfriend Tonny Aerts, with whom she makes street theater under the name Close-Act. But not right now because of corona. And so Hesther Melief picked up her old profession: design. This is how the Moving Bench was created, a track with fifteen sliding colored chairs. The design stems from their experience with street theater, where they try to bring people into contact with each other. But you could just as easily slide the chairs a meter and a half apart. So by accident, their creation turned out to be coronaproof street furniture.
Sabine Marcelis' "Totem Lights" stand out because of a combination of neon light and transparent synthetic resin, which creates a special reflection. The polished blocks move around an axis, which also creates an interesting fragmentation of light.
The virus that lingers in a public space, infecting others: if it is up to Studio Roosegaarde, that will soon be a thing of the past. With the Urban Sun, the well-known designer Daan Roosegaarde will present a light installation in early 2021 that will use special UV light to make public spaces virus-free. The installation streets out uv-c light with the 222 nm wavelength. This type of light kills 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria, including coronavirus. At the same time, it would remain safe for human skin and eyes. Variants of uv-c light with a longer wavelength (254 nm) are already widely used to disinfect objects or space, including in hospitals. But this does not allow people to be present at the same time because of health risks. The 222 nm technique can be used to put an entire room in "disinfecting light" while people are present. The goal is to create public spaces where people can meet safely.
