LXRY List: Let’s get Digital

MASTERS shines its light on developments in the virtual world. For example, designer Katie McIntyre designed the world's first "feminine futurist car," digital fashion has long since ceased to be science fiction, and artist collective Keiken examines how we can create new levels of consciousness and forms of society in a world where digital and physical experiences merge.

First feminine futurist car

American designer Katie McIntyre has designed the world's first "feminine futurist car," in collaboration with creative automotive designer Edouard Suzeau. This is a digital car, christened Dakini, which, for now, only drives around in the metaverse. Men rule the automotive industry. Katie therefore wanted to design a car for once from a female point of view, with feminine lines. The shape of the Dakini (an ancient Sanskrit word for sky traveler) is reminiscent of the silhouette of a woman's body, the engine head refers to the Al Wakrah Stadium in Qatar by the famous architect Zaha Hadid, the flanks are reminiscent of a shell. The message this car has for women: you drive your own body, are in control of your movements and progress. "Women are still in a battle for their bodily autonomy and still being shamed globally for their sexuality," McIntyre said. "That's why this car is so revolutionary."

Outing to the metaverse

Artist collective Keiken, comprised of Tanya Cruz, Hana Omori and Isabel Ramos, explores how we can create new levels of consciousness and coexistence in a world where digital and physical experiences merge. The audience is taken into the perspectives and realities of a vast metaverse. Keiken means "experience" in Japanese. Therefore, creating new experiences is what it is all about. Using Extended Reality (XR), films, games and blockchain, a metaverse is imagined in which multiple identities, perspectives and realities exist. For example, the interactive exhibition Morphogenic Angels and Pink Moonrock Cries explores different versions of the metaverse and our presence in it. A Virtual Reality installation allows participants to transform into a digital avatar to explore different guises of themselves. The exhibition invites us to look differently at how we live together in a world where the physical and virtual are increasingly merging.

Bits and bytes in fashion

Digital fashion has long since ceased to be science fiction. Fashion composed of pixels instead of textiles is almost imperceptibly part of everyday life. Slowly we are moving toward the metaverse: the future virtual world of the Internet in which our physical environment will merge with the digital one. For the necessary digital closet, a wide range already exists: from digital couture you buy as NFT to collectibles from prominent fashion houses for in your favorite game. Until February 26, 2023, Screenwear - Exploring Digital Fashion at Design Museum Den Bosch shows the most diverse and groundbreaking designs and gives insight into the brief history of this emerging phenomenon. From the futuristic fashion designs of Auroboros and the digital collections of The Fabrikant to the first non-binary avatar of the Institute of Digital Fashion and the hyper-realistic top model Shudu. Try on pieces from the museum's collection via the digital fitting mirror and get answers to all your questions about digital fashion. What exactly is it? Who are shaping digital fashion? And what do these developments mean for the fashion industry? One thing is certain: even in the digital world, the way you present yourself tells everything about who you are, can or want to be.
