PREVIEW MASTERS #44

The winter issue of MASTERS #44 includes a major interview with singer/pianist Karsu. In Helmond we sit down with Jermain de Rozario, who developed from an "unhinged party animal" into one of the youngest star chefs. And we walk with director Sjarel Ex through the empty halls of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which is undergoing a major renovation. Text: Bart-Jan Brouwer

Year of the Prick

2021 will be the Year of the Shot. Just a little while and we will again have vibrant stages, fully booked restaurants, euphoric stadiums, the joy of flying at Schiphol and MASTERS EXPO in the RAI. Until then, we'll keep it cozy at home. MASTERS #44 takes a look at interior design trends. Which colors dominate in 2021, will the trend be minimalist or excessive, which fabrics will prevail? The country's most authoritative interior designers, from Piet Boon to Robin Sluijzer, shine their light on the near future. And if we are allowed to go out again, how will we hit the road? In other words: what are the cars to look forward to and look forward to? We pass by the eye-catchers of 2021, ranging from space, luxury and silence wrapped in a beautiful costume to a 6,5-liter V12 that screams violently and squeezes out a maximum of 830 hp.

Those who cannot wait for the theaters, halls and stages to fill up again are singer-pianist Karsu, leading actor in this edition's Great Interview. “I notice that I can also offer affection, comfort and cheerfulness through social media. But I miss the people very much. I do feel lonely during a garden performance.” Until corona, she always had the idea that art was a luxury. When the theaters closed, she thought she had to accept it. I simply chose this profession. Only during corona did she discover that art is indeed a basic necessity of life. “Because it connects people. People are looking for something to hold on to.” Corona does more than underline the essence of art. According to Sjarel Ex, this 'sledgehammer blow' has an enormous influence on art. “Perhaps because we are starting to appreciate art better again and experience and live it more intensively.” When the director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen saw works of art for the first time after the first lockdown, he couldn't keep it dry. “Art is more than just beautifully made, art is something that is extremely comforting and at the same time very exciting. You need that yourself and you have to see that for yourself, and you also see that in times of corona. This time is an intensification of what the senses really need for a full human being.” Where Sjarel Ex lets go of his emotions when meeting art again, the other will do so with the first amuse-bouche prior to a long-awaited star dinner, and yet another when the curtain opens in a finally packed theater. The end of the dark corona tunnel is in sight. In the meantime, we continue to excite you with MASTERS in the field of gastronomy, art, craftsmanship, interior, travel... On the way to being able to tick off the bucket list again. On the way back to being a fully-fledged human being.
