Champagne bottle for space

Of course, a glass of champagne is never a bad thing. However, when you, as an astronaut, have safely reached space, this is certainly an achievement to raise a glass to. For this reason, a French company has designed a special champagne bottle that can be uncorked and drunk in space.

Maison Mumm unveiled the final design of the Mumm this week Cordon Rouge Stellar. Through a partnership with Axiom Space, a leader in commercial and human spaceflight, the special bottle will now fly on future space missions. The ambitious project was started in 2017 and now fully complies with aerospace specifications and AOC Champagne regulations. These regulations include that champagne must be stored and transported in glass and must be fitted with a traditional, mushroom-shaped cork.

Special blend

Once arrived in space, the champagne cannot be opened and poured in a normal way; a ring on top of the neck holds the cork in place and ensures safe uncorking. Traditional pouring without gravity is also not possible, but the bottle is designed to imitate this process. The champagne comes out of the neck and then collects in the ring that once held the cork. Once in the ring, the champagne is poured into a special glass.

Because sensory experiences change in the air, a special blend has been devised. The Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is made from grapes from 2016, the majority of which are Pinot Noir.

Cheers to safe (space) travel!
