Fabrique des Lumieres

Since April, Amsterdam has had a new digital art center in Zuiveringshal West on the Westergasterrein: Fabrique des Lumieres (an initiative of the French Culturespaces, known for Atelier des Lumières in Paris). This center hosts immersive exhibitions by classical, modern and contemporary artists. Using advanced technology, the works of art are projected onto all walls and floors (total projection area: 3.800 square meters) and brought to life by accompanying music, providing a sensory experience. In this way, art also becomes more accessible to young people. The first exhibition, entitled Gustav Klimt, gold and colorful (until December 31), consists of works by the aforementioned Austrian Symbolist painter and his contemporaries, and offers a new perspective on Viennese painting of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

75 candles and 3 pieces

On the occasion of Jiří Kylián's 75th birthday NDT 1 across the country with Celebrating an evening with Jiří Kylián! The full evening program consists of three works by the inspired, influential choreographer: Tar and Feathers, God's and Dogs en Beautiful figure. All were created for NDT and guarantee Kylián's extraordinary craftsmanship. A source of inspiration for Tar and Feathers (2006) was the medieval punishment in which someone was doused in black tar and covered in feathers. For Kylián, the feathers and tar are a metaphor for the 'unbearable lightness' and 'unbearable weight' of human existence. Gods and Dogs (2008), Jiří Kylián's 75th choreography, visualizes the thin line between what is normal and insane. Or as Kylián puts it: “No positive developments can ever be achieved without the help of a healthy dose of madness.” About Beautiful figure (1995) he says: “Where is the boundary between art and artificiality, between truth and lie? I am interested in this world 'in between', when the dancers change from people to performers. A world in which all kinds of realities merge in an unpredictable way.” Can be admired from September 22 to December 3.

Hope for change

The tenth edition of the biennial event will take place from September 8 to October 23 at various indoor and outdoor locations. Breda Photo Festival, the largest photo exhibition in the Benelux. The theme is Theater of Dreams. More than fifty international photographers show new world views in their work, which arise from hope for change. The festival shows a wide diversity of photography styles, from poetic to documentary. To celebrate the anniversary edition, several former participants have been asked to show new work. This is what the Dutch photographer Annegien van Doorn asks herself with her series Biophilia wonder how we relate to nature. And the Swiss photographer Yann Gross went to investigate the Amazon, where he did his work Aya built a bridge between the past and present by combining historical images with personal, sensory photographs. In addition to the surprising photo series, you can enjoy interactive workshops, artist talks and fun moments in the historic city center at BredaPhoto. The festival is ideal for a cultural day out or weekend away.

Chef Emile van der Staak, who has the ambition to change our food culture and therefore cooks with plants and vegetables that he obtains from the food forest. Designer Nienke Hoogvliet, who has introduced natural seaweed paint as an alternative to harmful textile paint. And Anna Nooshin, who criticizes the current social media culture of pretty pictures. In her documentary she also shares the less beautiful aspects of her life. All people who ask questions, hold up mirrors, take steps. Steps towards a healthier world and more understanding society.
