Maluma in Miami

“I was in Miami with my sister-in-law Susanna for Art Basel, where we had a really cool booth presentation through my gallery in London, Maddox Gallery. The Colombian singer Maluma, one of the biggest artists in the world with 60 million followers, had just bought an apartment in Miami and wanted to place a sculpture of mine there. Moreover, he had ordered a necklace from me with a bear. I brought it personally, so I could immediately see the apartment and measure everything. I then started the production of the statue, a buddha. We used renders to show what it would look like. The Buddha is now there. I went to a Maluma show at The Forum in LA with my brother, after which we had dinner with him. I have a very good connection with him. Due to Covid we were unable to go to America last year, but I want to put more energy into that market. For example, my partner is opening a 1.500 square foot gallery in LA. Many American artists want to connect with us, including Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. We are working hard, America is going to be conquered.

Gathering dust

“I had to be in Dubai because we had just installed a new statue in front of the Burj Khalifa, Birthday Suit, and are working hard on new projects. Martijn (Martin Garrix, ed.) was also in Dubai and we had a nice trip together by going into the desert on quad bikes, an hour from the city. With a shawl wrapped around our heads to protect against the sun and dust. It was one of the most beautiful experiences ever! That you can look infinitely far and see nothing but an ocean of sand. You can't just go racing recklessly, because the wind creates sharp sand peaks - if you're not careful you can roll down five or ten meters. It is a combination of beautiful and focus. We took some pictures at a cool spot. Martijn and I have been friends for years and it's just nice to be like that memories to capture.”

Enjoy sailing with the boys

“Martin Garrix was in Monaco to record the song We Are The People with Bono and The Edge. At the same time I was driving around the Cote d'Azur in the McLaren with my brother. We have Martijn measured in Monaco, and also a bunch of friends of his with whom we have been in touch ever since. Through Martijn we also met Max Verstappen, from which a friendship arose. Once when I was in Monaco with Rico and my brother, we decided to rent a boat – sailing with the boys, swimming, diving off a cliff. Super awesome. Lunch on the water, playing music. Later, two of Max's friends came by on a Red-Bull water scooter. Rico and I too, of course, on those scooters. Max doesn't have any art from me yet, but we have talked about it – for his new house.”

Brothers behind the wheel

“That's what I like most about creating experiences with myself. Last winter we snowboarded behind the Bentley. But what matters most to me is that we have time to talk, to brainstorm about what we are doing, about life, about meeting people. And that is best done when we participate in a rally. Sometimes we do one in the Alps, other times through Croatia, and a rally from Dubai across the desert to Abu Dhabi is planned for February. They are all organized trips, especially the ones from StreetGasm are cool. Louis and I have made at least thirty trips like this. Life moves so fast and we are doing so many different things. Then it's nice to spend four or five days talking about new ideas, concepts, improving the business aspects... And in the meantime, working on your hobby!”
