Ahead of time with David Bijlsma

Watchmaster David Bijlsma, CCO of GASSAN Diamonds shines the light on the world of watches for MASTERS. This time he writes his column from a very special location and highlights some new highlights.

“The moment you read this, I am walking through the Watches & Wonders 2023 fair in Geneva. The most prominent brands show their new collection here. I can already present some of these highlights here, as we have already received some pre-launches from some brands. The new Tank Française from Cartier is certainly worth mentioning. TAG Heuer has fully invested in its Carrerap line and is launching a new Carrera x Porsche model. Breitling recently launched the Premier line, which will now be fully equipped with its own caliber B01. A very special watch from Rolex was recently launched: the Deepsea Challenge is waterproof to a dizzying depth of 11.000 meters. This watch was specially developed in 2012 for James Cameron to descend to the deepest point in the ocean in a submarine. The novelties from Rolex are of course always the most exciting during this fair. I invite you to that Rolex.com to visit."

Flexible minute hand

Breguet puts the spotlight on two new watches. They have two different styles, but also one thing in common: the minute hand that continuously changes shape through an ingenious mechanism as it moves around the oval dial - a creation by Breguet. This flexible minute hand is as admirable as it is intriguing. In one version, the Reines de Naples 9838, the white lacquered dial with the midnight blue alligator leather strap. The white gold case shows off a watch ring, raised flank and crown set with blue sapphires. In the other version, Reines de Naples 9835, the white gold case forms an elegant contrast with the midnight blue mother-of-pearl dial. The raised flank, watch ring and case lug are set with 161 diamonds. A briolette diamond adorns the crown, while the folding clasp is decorated with 28 diamonds. This model is offered with an alligator leather bracelet in the same color as the dial and is limited to 20 pieces.

Ultimate diving watch

The Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge is the ultimate diving watch with a water resistance of up to 11.000 meters (36.090 ft). The watch is also Rolex's first full RLX titanium model: a particularly light metal that makes the Deepsea Challenge 30 percent lighter than the experimental watch used during James Cameron's 2012 expedition. The gigantic 50mm watch is 23mm thick, of which 9,5 mm is sapphire glass. This watch sets new standards in innovation: withstanding sky-high pressure, diving to the greatest depths that man can reach, pushing the boundaries of our knowledge: the Deepsea Challenge is ideally suited to guide the pioneers of tomorrow in these challenges.

Porsche on the wrist

TAG Heuer's best-known and most successful collection is the Carrera. The models are based on motorsport and are very popular among professional racing drivers. Thanks to the timeless and elegant appearance, the watches can be perfectly matched with racing overalls, but also in combination with a suit or everyday outfit. This new Carrera x Porsche model appears in this line of functional, reliable and sporty watches.
