5x costly divorces

Figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics show that one in three married couples will eventually divorce. A real day was even declared for it. On September 15, national attention will be drawn to the importance of expert guidance in divorces. But in addition to a lot of hassle, in most cases there is also some capital involved. MASTERS lists some of the most expensive fractions.

1. Jeff Bezos and Mackenzie Scott

Jeff and Mackenzie Bezos' divorce in 2019 has been called the most expensive divorce in history. After meeting at work at DE Shaw, MacKenzie was instrumental in starting Amazon. However, at the beginning of 2019, the couple announced that they were divorcing after 25 years of marriage. A settlement was reached in which MacKenzie was entitled to four percent of Amazon's shares. An amount that at the time amounted to almost € 34 billion. This instantly made Bezos' ex one of the most wealthy women in the world. She donated a large part to charity. MacKenzie divested herself of her interests in The Washington Post and space company Blue Origin.

2. Bill Gates and Melinda Ann French

The couple met in New York in 1987, after which Melinda soon started working in Microsoft's marketing department. On January 1, 1994, the couple married in Hawaii. Now with a 27-year marriage that - in their own words - was 'irreparably damaged', the two announced their divorce in 2021. According to Forbes, Melinda Gates walked away with at least €6.4 billion after her divorce from Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

3. Alec and Jocelyn Wildenstein

After 21 years of marriage, French businessman Alec Wildenstein and American socialite Jocelyn decided to end their marriage. The high-profile divorce made headlines worldwide. Especially because of the revealing details about Jocelyn's lifestyle. The woman admitted that the costs of her telephone bill amounted to approximately €55 per year. The judge decided that Wildenstein had to pay his ex the equivalent of €2.3 billion. In addition, Jocelyn reportedly received alimony of around €92 million annually for the next thirteen years.

4. Rupert Murdoch and Anna Maria Mann

Media magnate Rupert Murdoch settled €1999 billion with his ex Anna Maria Mann in 1.5, who also received another €100 million in cash. However, in the years following the divorce, a number of Murdoch biographies questioned this amount. Rupert, now 92, recently announced his engagement to girlfriend Ann Lesley Smith. It is the fifth marriage for the businessman, who finalized his divorce with ex-model Jerry Hall last year.

5. Bernie and Slavica Ecclestone

In November 2008, former model Slavica Ecclestone filed for divorce after 24 years of marriage to former Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone. The two had two daughters together: Tamara and Petra. The settlement was previously estimated at €1.1 billion. Although details never became completely clear; turned out that Slavica was the one who had to pay Bernie 100 million a year. This is due to the fact that a large part of Ecclestone's assets were transferred into Slavica's name when he suffered from serious heart problems in the late XNUMXs.
