Most historic Ferrari ever under the hammer
The 166 Ferrari 1948 Spyder Corsa, one of the first Ferraris ever sold, will go under the hammer on May 24th and 25th. Completely original and with an impressive racing history, it is expected to fetch €5.5 to €7.5 million.
Deep-pocketed car collectors can prepare for a tough bidding duel. On the idyllic shores of Lake Como, one of the most historic Ferraris ever will disappear under the hammer. “The 166 Ferrari 1948, chassis number 004 C is undoubtedly one of the most special early Ferraris ever built,” the auction house says.
The Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa is not just any classic car. This particular example was one of the first two cars that Enzo Ferrari ever sold to customers. In 1948, it was purchased by the Besana brothers, the very first customers of the brand. That alone makes the car unique, but its performance on the track is at least as special. The racing car finished sixth in the prestigious Targa Florio and took part in the iconic Mille Miglia twice. In addition, it has clocked up its miles in Formula 2 races and competitions in Italy and France.
Time capsule on four wheels
What makes this Ferrari extra special is its incredible originality. While many racing cars have been modified, repaired or even completely rebuilt over the years, this example is virtually untouched. The original bodywork, chassis, 2.0-liter V12 engine and gearbox are still completely intact. Ferrari Classiche awarded the car the White Book certificate, proof that this is one of the most authentic early Ferraris in the world.
The car will be auctioned by auction house on May 24 and 25 Broad Arrow. “The 166 Spyder Corsa is without a doubt the earliest and most important Ferrari in existence today. Although it bears chassis number 004, there is no other Ferrari prior to this car that remains intact or in its original condition,” said Barney Ruprecht, a car specialist at the auction house. “There is nothing on the market today, regardless of price, that can match the exclusivity and historical value of this car.”
That this historical value comes at a price is clear. The expected yield is between €5,5 and €7,5 million.
