A new standard for luxury
In rolling South Limburg, Van Oys Maastricht Retreat opened in 2025: a destination where heritage, nature, and contemporary luxury come together. Brothers Michel and Léon Maes transformed the centuries-old Oost Castle into the first 5-star Superior hotel in the Southern Netherlands and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
Under the leadership of hotelier Marc Alofs and his wife Stéphanie Stulens, Van Oys immediately positions itself at the top of the Dutch hotel industry. The retreat is located in the Cittaslow municipality of Eijsden-Margraten, a short distance from Maastricht, and consists of three buildings: the historic Château, the rustic Remise, and the modern Carré. Together, they offer 81 rooms and suites, finished in natural materials and warm tones. From elegant castle suites to rooms with terraces and private wellness facilities, everything exudes tranquility and refinement. 'Quiet luxury' is not a marketing term here, but a palpable experience. This also applies to the Oysana Spa, where organic treatments, yoga, and personal coaching take center stage, with an emphasis on recovery and balance rather than technological excess.
Culinarily, Van Oys belongs to the absolute top. At crEATe by Guido Braeken, the former two-star chef of Julemont cooks at the highest level. The fine dining restaurant, awarded two Michelin stars in one go last October, combines classic French techniques with a contemporary signature and seasonal products of exceptional quality. Located by the water is Maes, Cuisine du Terroir, under the leadership of culinary director Pascal Jalhay. Here, regional products and international influences come together in a kitchen that operates according to the Cittaslow philosophy. Local ingredients, sustainably caught fish, and artisanal meat form the basis of a refined, accessible gastronomy. With its pronounced vision for sustainability and close collaboration with local partners, Van Oys sets a new standard for conscious luxury in the Netherlands.
