Amsterdam's most beautiful sailing routes

The canals are of course inextricably linked to our capital. In combination with the IJ and the Amstel, Amsterdam is a true paradise for boating lovers. Since the best helmsmen are on shore, MASTERS shares some of the most beautiful routes on the water. 

From the Amstel 

If you come from the Amstel, you will sail under perhaps the most famous bridge in Amsterdam. The Skinny Bridge is a popular spot for lovers and photographers. There is even a legend that the bridge is named after the Skinny Sisters. The two sisters each lived on one side of the water. It is said that the wooden bridge was built so that they could visit each other more often. After the Skinny Bridge you sail on to Hermitage Amsterdam. Here you follow the bend to the left and you will pass hotel De L'Europe. If you have already completed a tour; it might be an idea to park the boat here for a while. You reach Restaurant Marie via the entrance of the hotel. Located on the banks of the Amstel, you can taste the taste of France here. After the stopover you can turn left and sail down the Rokin and the Grimburgwal, towards the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The Schreierstoren is located at the end of the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. Just after this tower you sail on the open water for a while, the Open Harbor Front. Once you arrive at the Open Havenfront, turn right and sail towards the Oosterdok past the Montelbaanstoren. Sail back towards the Amstel via the Oudeschans. 

From Westeinderplassen

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and spot some planes along the way, the sailing route from Schinkel to the Westeinderplassen (or vice versa) is an excellent idea. Around the corner from Aalsmeer you will find the Westeinderplassen. Here, sail towards the Ringvaart to Nieuwe Meer and possibly further to Schinkel. Once you have arrived you can return home via the same route.

From IJmeer 

If you enter Amsterdam from the direction of the IJmeer, you will first pass De Gooyer. A tower mill on the Amsterdam Funenkade. From here you sail on to The Tropenmuseum. Once you have arrived at the Amstel, continue along the (water) road towards the Amstel locks. Since the construction of the Oranjes locks, the lock gates have mainly been open and only closed when there were extreme differences in the water level. Immediately after Carré, turn right onto Nieuwe Prinsengracht and then immediately turn right onto Onkendegracht. Cruise along the canal and turn left onto Nieuwe Achtergracht. At the end of the Nieuwe Achtergracht, turn right onto Plantage Muidergracht. You might spot a stray pelican here, as you will find Artis on your left. Cruise around Artis and take the first right. After you have passed the Armand Sunier bridge and the Entrepotdok lock, turn right. On the starboard side you should see the De Gooyer mill again. You are back at the starting point.
