How to create more greenery in a fully built-up city? By taking to the air Following the example of the High Line Park in New York, which was built on a disused freight railway line, Rotterdam is launching Luchtpark Hofbogen: a park on the roof of the former Hofplein Station. Text: Bart-jan Brouwer

Picnic above the city

It is a green oasis with an event area, fruit orchard, native garden, playground and a view over the Rotterdam skyline. Catering and retail are located in the arches under the roof. The air park is the starting point of the 1,9 kilometer long former Hofbogen train viaduct. By the end of 2024 it should be possible to walk from the center to the A20. And Hofbogen will become more than just a city park, it must become a 'nature-inclusive and climate-adaptive landscape at height'. The park will have a smart and circular water system that collects and processes precipitation and reduces flooding. Greenery also contributes to improving air quality and increasing biodiversity in the city.

LXRY LIST 2022

The annual LXRY List 2022 booklet takes a look into the distance, where new opportunities dawn. Doing business with a view to a better world. Rewilding Europe is committed to saving lost animal species by making room for truly wild nature. And De Apostelhoeve is taking advantage of the warming by growing wine on the Limburg hills and gaining international recognition for it. In addition to these budding economies, attention is also paid to sustainable initiatives. Such as the new Tank Must from Cartier, a watch that runs on solar energy. And a lamp against light pollution. But the list also includes an over-the-top hotel stay in Versailles Palace. Après nous, le déluge? No, but there should also be room to enjoy and experience in the new world.
