Five reasons why Oman should not be missing from your travel bucket list
Centuries-old fortresses, golden deserts and crystal clear waters. Oman is the place to be this fall. What you absolutely should not miss in this unique country? Rob van Helvoort, founder of Travel Legends, shares his five ultimate highlights with MASTERS.
1.Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Your tour will most likely start in Muscat, the capital of Oman. With its graceful, white buildings, this city has remained very traditional. Moreover, you will find one of the largest mosques in the world here: the Sultan Qaboos Mosque. The Mosque was built on behalf of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said in 1992, who believed that his country Oman should have a national mosque. The entire complex covers approximately 40.000 square meters.
2. Unique views during the Balcony Walk
Discover beautiful views during the Balcony Walk at the Jebel Shams, also known as the 'Grand Canyon' of Oman. This mountainside hiking trail reveals a new, impressive panorama at every turn. The natural beauty of the area, with its steep cliffs and vast landscape, makes every step worth it…
3. Dune bashing through the desert
According to Rob, Wahiba Sands is the most beautiful part of the desert in Oman. Discover the sand dunes in an adventurous way with a 4WD or on a quad. There is a good chance that you will meet Bedouin women along the way. They live in traditional ways in camps in the middle of the desert. An absolute must is to spend the night at this place. The extremely clear starry sky will amaze you.
4. Wild camping
Wild camping is allowed almost everywhere in Oman and is one big adventure. You can camp on deserted beaches on the Arabian Sea or in shady oases in the great deserts. Whether you want to relax to the sound of flowing water or feel the thrill of exploring the wild Omani desert; it is an experience that you will not easily find anywhere else.
5. Take a dip in the clear blue wadis
Even though a large part of Oman consists of desert, you will also find green nature there. There are many shady wadis, which invite you to take a refreshing dip. In addition to swimming, you can also walk here along the emerald green water surrounded by green palms. According to Rob, the most beautiful ones can be found in the north of the country: Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid.
