In 1983, young industrial designer Nerio Alessandri built his first fitness machine in his parents' garage. Four decades later, Technogym has grown into a global symbol of the modern wellness lifestyle – a brand that brings together technology, design, and health. MASTERS in conversation with Alessandri.
You started Technogym in a garage. What drove you back then?
It was 1983. I was 22 years old and worked as an industrial designer during the day. In the evenings, I built fitness equipment in my parents' garage. My driving force was a passion for sports and the belief that movement could improve people's lives. I wanted to create equipment that brought together biomechanics, technology, and design – inspiring and functional.
What were the first obstacles, and what gave you confidence in the success?
“The biggest challenge was money. I had no capital or investors, only a dream and determination. That is why I focused on innovation: unique machines for which customers were willing to pay in advance. That trust was the turning point.”
What was your first design?
“A hack squat machine – simple, but based on the principles of functionality, safety, and design. A humble beginning that laid the foundation for everything that followed. It reminds me that great ideas often originate with simple means and a clear vision.”
Technogym has since grown into a global lifestyle brand. How would you describe it yourself?
Technogym is more than a manufacturer of fitness equipment: it symbolizes the modern wellness lifestyle. We combine Italian design, technology, and knowledge of human performance in a holistic approach to health. We operate at the intersection of fitness, luxury, and innovation, offering not only high-end equipment but also digital ecosystems, personalized training programs, and wellness experiences for homes, hotels, businesses, and medical institutions.
In your opinion, what are the most important trends in fitness and lifestyle?
Personalization is the key: digital coaching, AI-driven training, and connected equipment make it possible to work in a customized way. In addition, mental well-being, recovery, design, and sustainability are becoming increasingly important.
What is the key to Technogym's growth?
Innovation, design, and a clear mission. We have evolved from biomechanical equipment to software, digital connectivity, and interactive content. Collaborations with athletes, designers, and medical experts keep us forward-thinking, while remaining true to our mission: promoting well-being as a social responsibility.
How do you see the future of wellness worldwide?
The future is hybrid and highly personalized. People train at home, at work, and on the go – all connected via digital ecosystems. The focus is shifting towards prevention, vitality, and a long, healthy life. Governments are also increasingly recognizing that investing in health is a sustainable choice. Our digital ecosystem makes it possible to perfectly tailor training to every individual user.
How does Technogym distinguish itself in that future?
Personalization is crucial. Thanks to AI and digital technology, we can seamlessly merge people and technology. We translate personal data into training programs that adapt in real time, ensuring every interaction is meaningful and results-oriented.
Where do you want to take Technogym in the coming years?
Our mission remains: to spread wellness worldwide. We continue to enrich our ecosystem with new equipment, digital content, and inspiring experiences that respond to the growing need for health, vitality, and a long, active life.
