Auction gem: Tupac ring is the most expensive piece of hip-hop memorabilia

Recently, a crown-shaped ring with gold, diamonds and rubies from the legendary rap icon Tupac Shakur disappeared under the auction hammer. The jewel sold for a record amount and will go down as the most expensive piece of hip-hop memorabilia ever sold

Tupac wore the ring during his final public appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 4, 1996. Just days after the event, tragedy struck when the young artist, at the age of 25, was fatally shot in Las Vegas on September 13 . 

The ring that went under the auction hammer is shaped like a crown and contains gold, rubies and diamonds. Tupac designed the ring to celebrate his engagement to sweetheart Kidada Jones. The jewel is engraved with 'Pac & Dada'. Pac for Tupac and Dada for Kidada Jones. Sotheby's added that the design was also inspired by its affinity with Niccolo Machiavelli's political manifesto The Prince.

New owner makes himself known

The crown-shaped jewel eventually sold at a Sotheby's auction for an unprecedented €900.000. This amount more than tripled the previous estimate of €270.000. The buyer of the iconic piece remained unknown. However, a few days later Drake posted a photo on Instagram with the ring, it turns out he is the new owner. The Canadian rapper later officially confirmed this to the auction house.
