Princess Diana's wardrobe auctioned: 300 iconic items under the hammer

We now know that Diana was more than just a princess. She was a style icon, a charitable soul and, as it turns out, a woman with an enviably stylish wardrobe. From elegant evening gowns to her famous Lady Dior handbag: on 26 June it will all disappear under the hammer at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills.

The auction house has gone big with “Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection”, a collection of over 300 pieces, many of which have never appeared at auction before. Think of garments that Lady Di wore during royal visits, state dinners and hospital visits, such as the famous 'Caring Dress', a silk floral dress by Belville Sassoon, estimated to be worth between €93.000 and €187.000.v

Also special is a cream evening gown by Catherine Walker, specially made for Diana's tour of Saudi Arabia in 1986. With long sleeves and a high neckline, a subtle example of diplomacy wrapped in silk. Expected to fetch? Between €187.000 and €280.000. Also on the list is a silk ensemble by Bruce Oldfield that she wore to Royal Ascot in 1987. "Dynasty-Di" at its best and probably worth €93.000 to €187.000.

Accessories such as hats and handbags are also on offer. A stylish John Boyd hat or a Lady Dior lambskin could be yours, provided you have between €18.000 and €37.000 to spare, of course.

Part of the proceeds will go to charity, in keeping with Diana's philanthropic spirit. Bidding can be done online, but those who really want to be lavish can be welcomed with a glass of champagne and a classic afternoon tea in the Peninsula ballroom.
