MASTERS Magazine #43 takes a look at the new world: suddenly humanity appears not to be so invulnerable after all and we have become more aware of the here and now. An edition full of inspiration, new insights and luminaries from different fields. And iconic dance duo Marne and Imre van Opstal shine on the cover. A keeper edition, full of relevant content. Text: Bart-Jan Brouwer
Online Editorial: Larissa Schaule Jullens

Marne and Imre van Opstal

As children, they collected autographs from the dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater and imitated choreographies of the Hague dance company in the living room. Their dream was to one day represent NDT themselves. That dream came true for Marne (1990), Imre (1989) and their eldest and youngest sister. How special: four children from one family who were the only Dutch people to be part of the international group. Marne, who became the figurehead of NDT, terminated his contract this year; Imre did the same with the Israeli Batsheva Dance Company. Together they continue as a choreographer duo. MASTERS visited the pair in The Hague, where Imre temporarily lives with her brother.

Edward Leenders, managing director De L'Europe

One of his first achievements as managing director of the De L'Europe was the renovation of the hotel. With this, Edward Leenders (Overasselt, 1973) wants to herald a new chapter for the hotel: the era of Original Amsterdam Luxury. “We want to give our guests the most valuable experience available in the city.”

Jimmy Nelson: Lessons from the Old World

As a tribal photographer he has one foot in the 'old world'. What lessons does Jimmy Nelson (1967, Sevenoaks, England) take back from his visits to indigenous cultures? “All that matters is what you can give back to the world. That is the true feeling of wealth, of happiness.”

Nicolai Nørregaard, Kadeau** Copenhagen

As an islander, Nicolai Nørregaard (Svaneke, Denmark, 1979) grew up with what the earth and sea had to offer. This purity can be found on the menu of his restaurant Kadeau, with branches in Copenhagen and Bornholm. Masters visited him in the Danish capital.

Upon entering Kadeau Copenhagen, the cozy character is immediately noticeable. No weddings and parties here, but lunches and dinners in an intimate setting. When the weather is nice, on the patio or at one of the wooden tables inside. What is also striking: the amount of glass jars with juices, vegetables and fruits that are displayed in a huge cupboard that separates the kitchen from the entrance: the fermented treasures of Bornholm, where Nicolai Nørregaard comes from.

Chloe Rutzerveld

As a Future Food Designer, she designs new ways of food production. Meat? A stage passed. Even vegetables will no longer have to be grown in the future. If it were up to Chloé Rutzerveld (Landgraaf, 1992), in the future fungi, bacteria and yeasts will form the basis and the sensory experience will be generated by virtual reality, augmented reality, touch, smell and sound. “You can really fool your brain.”

Outliers in the new world

The new world will undoubtedly accommodate Greubel Forsey's timeless design, which starts where other watch brands leave off. MASTERS spoke to both founders. And in this edition there are many more highlights, such as entrepreneur Wesley dos Santos, hotelier Edward Leenders of the recently renovated De L'Europe and cyclist Wout Poels. Dreams are unattainable for any virus. And this edition of MASTERS offers plenty of inspiration for that.
