Alma
De Lind 45a, Oisterwijk
Alma is built on a crystal-clear vision: everything must be right, from the first bite to the atmosphere at the table. Chef Wouter van Laarhoven created a culinary world with two faces in the historic building De Swaen on De Lind. Upstairs is the Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant, with dishes such as 'Poulet de Bresse with pithivier and green asparagus' and 'Halibut with mussel, sobrassada and wild garlic'. Downstairs is Alma Bodega in a more accessible bistro style. Whichever you choose, you taste the same signature: refined, thoughtful and hospitable, but without distance. It is precisely this combination of top level and relaxed elegance that makes Alma so strong.

Monarh
Bredaseweg 204-08
Monarh has something rare: an evening here is not only about what comes to the table, but above all about what happens at the table. In the historic mission house Rooi Harten, Paul and Ralph Kappé, as chef and sommelier, shape their own idea of hospitality: refined, warm and with genuine attention to connection. This is why Monarh feels like a place where beautiful dishes, good wines and real attention for each other naturally come together. At Monarh you feel at home and experience time and again how special 'together' is.

De Houtloods
Burgemeester Brokxlaan 1041
In the oldest building of the Spoorzone, a former NS workshop from 1867, everything revolves around openness. Where wood was once stored and dried for trains, there now stands a real eyecatcher in the middle of the space: the kitchen bar. It is woven into the kitchen itself, with the kitchen and drinks bar formed from a single piece of steel, so as a guest you feel everywhere where the energy comes from. The industrial decor, the open space and that informal, almost raw atmosphere make it exciting, but it is above all the culinary quality that stays with you. Tough and unforced on the surface, seriously good on the plate. And as soon as the sun appears, this is also one of the most attractive terrace spots in the city.

De Eksterhoeve
Klein Westerwijksestraat 11, Biest Houtakker
De Eksterhoeve proves that refined and relaxed go together beautifully. Set in green surroundings just outside Tilburg, this is a modern bistro for those who want to eat well, sit well and above all escape the noise of everyday life. The atmosphere is stylish yet unpretentious, the menu familiar with a contemporary twist. Dishes include Halibut with risotto and champagne beurre blanc, Tournedos Rossini and Grilled leek with celeriac cream and hazelnut. That is precisely what makes it interesting for those seeking quality without formality. At the same time, De Eksterhoeve is more than just a restaurant. With its space, calm and character suited to private dining, business meetings and, from this year, closed meeting rooms, this spot lends itself to occasions where hospitality and quality must go hand in hand. A destination for those who enjoy life, families and professionals who appreciate comfort, quality and a strong setting.

Stadscafé de Spaarbank
Noordstraat 125
De Spaarbank sits in a striking building from 1910 at Tilburg's five-way junction, where Tuinstraat, Noordstraat, Stationsstraat, Nieuwlandstraat and Korte Schijfstraat meet. It is one of the landmarks designed by Tilburg architect C. van Hoof (1861-1952). Once the headquarters of the Vereeniging Tilburgsche Spaarbank, it is now a city cafe where much of that original character has been preserved, from the tall windows and stained glass to the distinctive hexagonal corner towers that make the building so recognizable. Inside you immediately sense this is no ordinary hospitality venue: the former waiting room, old passages and details such as the stained glass doors bearing the coats of arms of Tilburg and Brabant give the place visible character. It is precisely this historical setting that makes De Spaarbank appealing, but it is not merely a beautiful building. You can come in for coffee and a newspaper just as easily as for lunch, drinks or dinner, and that accessibility is exactly its strength. The menu contains no complicated constructions, but dishes that are well made and sometimes given a small personal touch, such as bitterballen with rendang or Tilburg oyster mushroom. This means De Spaarbank does not feel like a monument that happens to house a cafe, but like a living place that has truly become part of the city.

Then settle in afterwards for a good glass and something from the lunch menu.

De Burgerij
Noorderstraat 87
In the family home of the three brothers who run the place, in the heart of Tilburg's Dwaalgebied, you sit down surrounded by greenery, cobblestones in the courtyard and an atmosphere that balances between French charm and Brabant comfort. On the menu everything can exist side by side: from kale to caviar, from oysters to generously filled sharing boards. It is precisely this abundance that makes De Burgerij so beloved by locals.

Buutvrij
Stationsstraat 49
Buutvrij is a fine coffee spot that feels like a second home: warm, creative, relaxed. You come for good coffee, fresh juices, homemade cake and strong breakfast and lunch dishes, and then stay for the liveliness, the art on the walls and the pleasant bustle. Order the Truffeltastisch (two slices of sourdough with homemade egg salad, parma ham, seed mix and truffle mayonnaise) or Tosti Temperament (with chorizo, cheese, fresh spinach and crispy chili oil), and you will immediately understand why Buutvrij has been so beloved in Tilburg for years.

Vine
Piusplein 74
Vine is the kind of place where you truly disappear into the evening. At Piusplein, it's all about fine wines from around the world and small dishes that are just a bit more exciting than standard bar fare, from langoustine with garlic butter to duck liver with fig, pear and speculaas. The atmosphere is relaxed and lively, yet refined, so one glass quickly becomes another, another plate, and another hour sitting down.

Burgemeester Jansen
Piushaven 22
Burgemeester Jansen is the kind of pub where Tilburgers are happy to settle in without fuss. At Piushaven, it's about craft beer, from Schelde Zeezuiper to the quadrupel from St. Bernardus Apt., wine, whisky and charcuterie boards that are simply good, with bites from local suppliers and exactly that Brabant hospitality that makes a place feel instantly familiar. Whether you stop by for a late lunch, a long drink or simply a good conversation, Burgemeester Jansen feels unpretentious and pleasantly like home.

Restaurant RAK
Hopliedenkade 249
RAK, Restaurant Aan de Kade, makes the most of its location at the head of Piushaven. The view over the water and the lively quay gives the place something appealing. From lunch to drinks and dinner, the menu offers enough variety for different occasions, with dishes that receive attention in both preparation and presentation. Going to RAK means more than a nautical term here: it's to moor, relax and enjoy good food, from light dishes on the terrace in the afternoon sun to full dinners, all prepared with care and presented with attention. As you look out over the water and the lively harbour, taste, atmosphere and craftsmanship come together.

Café De Slijterij

De Slijterij is exactly what you hope to find when you crave a true brown cafe. No concept, no frills, but a familiar place where the landlord makes you feel welcome and where the clientele is as mixed as it is natural. Whether for Friday afternoon drinks or after shopping through to serious nightlife in the small hours, Korte Heuvel 42 is the right spot. It's precisely that combination of accessibility, warmth and old-fashioned cafe atmosphere that makes De Slijterij a popular place.

Things to do
Wandering through Dwaalgebied
Dwaalgebied is the name for a collection of narrow streets in the city centre, squeezed between Heuvelstraat and the railway line. The area, somewhat village-like with urban appeal, is characterised by many stately townhouses from the 19th and 20th centuries. Unlike the area south of Heuvelstraat, Dwaalgebied, the collective name for Willem II-straat, Noordstraat, Stationsstraat, Nieuwlandstraat and Tuinstraat, is home mainly to small independent businesses. MASTERS' favourite is Nieuwlandstraat with its authentic shops.

Piushaven
This is Brabant's largest inner-city harbour, where inland cargo vessels line the quays and contemporary hospitality concepts have taken root, making Piushaven a gastronomic boulevard. Here you can enjoy Burgundian pleasures at one of Tilburg's finest and most peaceful spots. Taste wines at vinoteca Satiata, craft beer at Burgemeester Jansen, fresh seafood at Smits Vis aan de Haven, panini at Porto, sushi at Jaxx Marina, Schrobbeler bonbons and ice cream at Huize Geers, or settle on the terrace of Restaurant RAK. Piushaven offers a wide and varied choice, with a waterside spot for every moment and every taste.

Spoorzone
This 75-hectare area in the heart of the city, by the railway and station, perhaps best shows what makes Tilburg strong: not erasing its industrial past, but transforming it into something that feels relevant right now. On this former NS site, right beside the tracks, old workshops and warehouses found new life as spaces for culture, hospitality, work and meeting. Raw, grand and with visible respect for what once happened here. What was once the domain of workers, fire and steel is now one of Brabant's most exciting urban spots: an area where old and new, roughness and ambition work remarkably well together. Be overwhelmed by the grandeur and silence of library LocHal, enjoy one of the beers brewed on site at LOC Brewery, such as the Train Hopper or Double Dinky, or have an espresso on the terrace at Stoom 013 Koffie Cultuur, housed in an old cattle wagon. A kind of NDSM for Tilburg, a wonderful place.
Spoorzonetilburg.nl
Spoorpark
Here you see how urban renewal can truly add something. On a former marshalling yard now lies a vibrant city park where Tilburgers come to play sports, relax, meet up or simply sit in the green, with hospitality within reach and the city centre around the corner. What makes it particularly strong is that the park emerged as a citizen initiative, the largest in the Netherlands: not a top-down plan, but a place genuinely made by and for the city.

Doloris Meta Maze
Spoorlaan 21c
An experience that pulls you completely out of your everyday rhythm. In this Tilburg art maze you wander alone through surrealist rooms, installations and passages that keep your senses constantly alert, sometimes crawling, climbing or feeling your way through the half-light. Precisely because you hand over your phone and watch, everything hits harder. Fortunately you can recover afterwards with something to eat or a cocktail, because you'll want to talk about this trip for a while.

Museum De Pont
Wilhelminapark 1
This museum owes its existence to Jan de Pont, the Tilburg art lover and entrepreneur who decided shortly before his death to dedicate part of his wealth to contemporary visual art. That money grew into a museum that has been housed since 1992 in a former wool spinning mill: a building whose enormous, austere spaces give contemporary art all the room it needs. Outside, Anish Kapoor's Sky Mirror sets the tone, as if the museum wants to make clear right away that looking here is never without consequence. What makes De Pont strong is that it doesn't rely on a full wall and a few big names, but gives artists real space. You see that now too in ATLAS, Steve McQueen's first Dutch solo exhibition (on view until 30 August). This means De Pont doesn't feel like a museum where you pick up some art on the way, but like a place where artists are taken seriously, and you as a visitor therefore are too.

TextielMuseum
Goirkestraat 96
TextielMuseum perhaps shows better than any other spot in Tilburg what made the city great. Thanks to the textile industry, Tilburg grew into Brabant's 'wool city' during the nineteenth century, and it is precisely in this museum, housed in a former textile factory, that this past gains new meaning. You see not only how textile production shaped the city, but also how the craft lives on today in TextielLab, the workshop where artists and designers continue to produce new ideas. This makes the museum anything but static: history, craft and experiment interweave here.

Het Cenakel
Cenakel 1
In this former monastery chapel from 1908, classical music, contemporary concerts and exhibitions find a stage in a setting that makes such an impression precisely through its beautiful acoustics and restrained atmosphere. The fact that the building was narrowly saved from demolition in the nineteen-nineties and has led a cultural second life since 1998 only adds to Het Cenakel's significance.
