In 'Auction Gems of the Week' every week, MASTERS looks for unique objects that will go under the hammer. This week the Bugatti Chiron Profilee. The copy sold for a record amount in Paris last week. With this, the car dethroned a LaFerrari Aperta as the most expensive new car ever auctioned.
The Bugatti Chiron was first shown to the world in March 2016 as a worthy successor to the Veyron. Although 500 units of the Chiron were ultimately produced, the Chiron Profilée is one one off. The larger air intakes, a larger grille, an integrated rear spoiler and the special color Argent Atlantique makes the Profilée indeed different from other Chirons. The top speed of 380 kilometers per hour is also slightly higher then the Chiron Pur Sport. At the same time, according to RM Sotheby's, the car is also the last Bugatti with a W-16 engine.
Not second hand
The auction by auction house RM Sotheby's took place in Paris. The hammer ultimately fell at an amount of € 9.792.500. Never before has so much been paid for a new car at an auction. Still, the car does have some kilometers on the odometer, 396 to be precise. But Bugatti guarantees that it is not a second-hand car. We can expect that for a modest € 10 million…. Especially when you consider that there are some additional fuel costs; the average consumption of the Profilée is 1 in 4.
