From stars to keys: Michelin rates hotels

No stars, but keys: in addition to rating restaurants, Michelin will also focus on hotels in 2024. The so-called Michelin Key focuses attention on establishments that offer travelers exceptional hotel and travel experiences.

The long-awaited hotel ranking will be revealed in the first half of 2024. Although the exact form and date are yet to be determined, the rating will be based on 'keys', an innovative approach as opposed to the traditional 'star rating' for restaurants. 

The recognition will be based on five criteria: whether the hotel contributes to the local experience, the architecture and interior design is assessed, the quality and consistency of service, the comfort and maintenance, the individuality and the unique character of the hotel. establishment and finally the coherence between quality and the price paid. 

According to International Director of the Michelin Guide Gwendal Poullennect, the key will be a clear and reliable indication for travelers: ''Just like the Michelin star restaurants, the Michelin Key will reward the most exceptional hotels around the world. This award simultaneously recognizes it teamwork of dedicated and passionate hotel professionals.” The key will be awarded after one or more stays carried out anonymously by the Michelin Guide selection teams.
