Retired? This is where you truly want to grow old

In 2025, retirement is no longer synonymous with geraniums and herb gardens. You'd much rather choose sun, sea, and an (affordable) cocktail within easy reach. The brand-new Global Retirement Report 2025 examines where you can best enjoy your retirement. And yes, the winning country is right in Europe.

The researchers examined 44 countries and assessed them based on six pillars: visa procedures, mobility and citizenship, economy, tax benefits, quality of life, and safety and integration. In other words: everything you need for a carefree and stylish retirement.

Not every country made it to the top. While some excel in quality of life but struggle with complex bureaucracy or exorbitant income requirements, others score highly on tax benefits but fall short in healthcare or safety. Only countries that are balanced across the board—accessible, attractive, and livable—made it to the top 10.

Striking: in 70% of the countries surveyed, healthcare is above average, living conditions are pleasant, and the climate is favorable. In many cases, there are also opportunities for family reunification, and with a monthly income of €2.000 or less, you are usually eligible for a residence permit.

The big winner this year? Portugal.

Why? Portugal not only scores highly for quality of life and safety, but also offers accessible healthcare, a welcoming culture, and a smooth visa process. Add to that the mild climate, low cost of living, and a clear path to citizenship (in just five years, while retaining your Dutch nationality), and it's clear: this is Europe's retirement paradise.
