He has his own collection of exclusive and sustainable furniture. He also designs and makes custom made designer furniture. What cloth is Lucas made of? Text: Larissa Schaule Jullens

Cut from the right cloth

“I design and make exclusive and unique handmade furniture. My designs are artistic yet practical to use. In every piece of furniture I show my passion for wood and craftsmanship. I design and realize the furniture myself, there are plans to expand in the future. I originally started in construction as a carpenter, but at some point I discovered that I wanted to go in the creative direction. I wanted to work with more beautiful and high-quality wood and then took the design furniture maker course at the Hout- en Meubileringscollege in Amsterdam.”

Sustainable Dutch Design

“Sustainability is very important to me and that is reflected in my furniture. Many trees are cut down every year, a lot of wood is consumed and little is replanted. Yes, trees are planted, but they are often the same type of trees that are cut down again after 15 years. These are not the types of wood that are very suitable for furniture. The trees that I use in my products need between 80 and 100 years to grow sufficiently. Consider, for example, oak, walnut or elm wood. That is why I am having trees replanted in collaboration with Trees for all. I include sustainability in every step of the process.”

From a to Z

“I usually visit customers, especially when it concerns custom orders. I listen to the customer's wishes and give my advice. Once the wishes are clear, I will make a rendering of the design. That is a realistic drawing of the furniture. The customer can then visualize what the furniture will look like in his or her home. After seeing the rendering, you have the option to make any adjustments. During the process I keep in touch with the customer and send photos in the meantime. It is possible for the customer to visit the workshop and studio to experience for himself how his or her furniture is made.”

“I have been a member of the League for two weeks. The reason for my membership is that I want to expand my network. The League seems to me to be a very valuable network and we are all in the same segment. Sparring with other entrepreneurs is never a bad idea.”
