The design philosophy of designer and colourist Carole Baijings has always been the Atelier-Way-of-Working. This means she makes her own colours, materials and models by hand, creating new and unique shapes. For MASTERS, Carole highlights the latest developments in interior design.
Light on sustainability
In the search for a designer for their latest lamp, the Belgian lighting company Delta Light turned to an architectural firm MVRDV. An important starting point was sustainable production of the lamp: couldn't something be made from the residual material left over from the production of a lamp? The stacks of aluminum profiles - an important part in the production of luminaires, from which cutting residues often remain - in various shades of white, silver, black and gold fascinated the architects of MVRDV. By varying the profiles in scale and size, the High Profile series could be created: a cube-shaped pendant luminaire, a wall lamp in the shape of an arc and a free-standing model with profiles placed next to each other. The series puts the production process in the spotlight and places what normally takes place behind the scenes on a stage.
Coral lamps
It was a surprise during the recent graduation presentation of the Design Academy Eindhoven. The Korean designer Sangmin Oh debuted with it Knitted Light: a magical collection of knitted lamps. They seem to move like coral reefs and impress with their refined pastel colors, subtle shapes and textures. In collaboration with the Tilburg Textile Museum, he researched the nylon yarns used, among other things, to make fishing nets. When he saw how beautifully they conduct light, he combined them with elastic yarns to knit self-supporting luminaires. The Knitted Light is fluorescent: when the lamp is off, it glows for a long time.

heavy metal
After his Sheet Collage series, in which Joost van Bleiswijk wall lamps made with different layers of metal, the designer took on the challenge of implementing the same idea in 3D. This led to the series New Light on the Block: stand-alone objects consisting of a mix of materials (brass, copper, aluminum) with an integrated light element.
