Jorn van Stein in MASTERPIECES: true passion and craftsmanship
The Rotterdam design duo Jorn van Stein and Bernd van Riel develop spatial concepts and products with their design agency AttachStudio. The company was founded in 2019 by Van Stein and Van Riel. They connect their backgrounds in product and interior design and approach their environment through the lens of spatial experience and usability. Jorn and Bernd challenge common usage by focusing on the reinterpretation of everyday materials, objects and processes. For these MASTERPIECES, MASTERS talks to designer Jorn. Text: Mical Joseph
FRAME X BOLON: DESIGN CHALLENGE
“During Dutch Design Week 2019, 'Apparellel Existence' is the result of a design challenge from Frame Magazine X BOLON. They challenged Dutch creatives to create an immersive experience based on the idea of hyper-personalization. The winning augmented reality concept from fashion collective Studio PMS invited visitors to explore their fashion collection mixed with Bolon's latest flooring collection 'Diversity' through an app.
We, Attach Studio, created an exhibition made up of various islands and surfaces that together form an organic and abstract landscape. This creates an open structure in which multiple intuitive routes emerge. This leaves the visitor free to discover the exhibition in their own way. The soft color tones complement the digital fashion collection and are derived from Bolon's Diversity collection.
A digital layer is added within the physical landscape using augmented reality. Visitors are invited to select one of three unique digital environments within an app. While wandering through the physical space dressed in Bolon materials, visitors can reveal the digital outfits by scanning a QR code. The apparently empty landscape in combination with the movement of visitors triggers bystanders to interact.” Photo: Ewout Huibers | Copyright: Frame Magazine
The Blue Cabinet
“This project started with our love for the shelving unit. What intrigues us about this is the simplicity of the structure, the repetition and clarity. Most people have one at home, but it often only fulfills the function of storage or even concealment. The Blue Cabinet is designed to be placed in the home as a full-fledged interior object. With its open construction and fine lines, this shelving unit has a subtle and timeless appearance. It is the ideal place to give your collectibles a nice place in your home and add a personal layer to your interior. The steel elements are blindly attached to the wall and provide support for the color-accented wooden planks. This color accent blurs the boundary between the materials and gives the whole a graphic appearance. In addition to the standard model, the Blue Cabinet is also available for re-design in custom dimensions and color.” Photo: Milou Cornax
Oostenwind Coffee
“This special project is a result of the collaboration between Pure C** chef Syrco Bakker and Rob Clarijs (De Zeeuwse Branding & Winner of Coffee Masters London 2019). In 'Oostenwind' the Indonesian roots of Syrco Bakker merge with the Zeeland roots of Rob Clarijs. It is a coffee where origin is essential. This was imported by Rob himself, from the processing station directly to the roasting plant, without middlemen: fair chain. To get the most out of this unique coffee, an average mug or cup is of course not sufficient. Special tableware is required for this. We were tasked with improving the drinking experience while maintaining optimal taste. The coffee is very hot after serving and the taste is compromised if the coffee remains too hot for too long. By giving the thin-walled porcelain cup a concentric shape, it ensures that the coffee cools faster so that the taste remains optimal. In addition to the limited retail edition, the coffee is served in combination with the cups in Pure C.” Photo: Joey RietveldJorn van Stein | Photo: Milou Cornax
