Meet the hotel from a 3D printer

A campground in Marfa, Texas will soon be transformed into a true glamping retreat. But not just any one: when realized it will be the world's first 3D printed hotel. From the printer or not, there is no skimping on luxury. 

Currently El Cosmico, an off-grid campsite with a little touch hippie. Founded by Liz Lambert, it is a popular spot for holidaymakers who want to sleep under the stars in the middle of the desert. But Lambert decided to take a different tack. In collaboration with ICON and architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group, the first 3D printed hotel should be completed next year. 

The hotel comes from the 3D printer of ICON Build. The company can print large objects and have even developed a special material called Lavacrete. This material can be printed quickly and easily and is said to be very strong and durable. 

The project will expand the area from 21 hectares to 62 hectares. The grounds will include domed guesthouses, a circular infinity pool with cabanas, an open-air spa and areas where guests can attend various workshops. 

Nature as inspiration 

From the design to the building materials, the great inspiration for the project is nature. By using innovative 3D printing technology, the hotel designed by BIG will fit seamlessly into the desert landscape through their round shapes. Desert sand will also be added to the concrete mix of the 3D-printed hotel to mimic the structure and color of a traditional home.  

In addition to the hotel, the team also wants to offer permanent housing under the name Sunday Homes. These 3D printed houses, like the hotel, will provide an unparalleled connection to the desert landscape.
