5. It Follows (2014)

For nineteen-year-old Jay, fall should have been all about school, boys, and relaxing weekends at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent encounter, she is haunted by terrifying visions and nightmares. The constant feeling that something or someone is on her tail turns her life into a nightmare. This subtly disturbing film brought viewers’ average heart rates to 82 beats per minute.

4. The Conjuring (2013)

Paranormal experts Lorraine and Ed attempt to save a family plagued by unseen forces in their home. Their investigation leads to a terrifying confrontation with a demonic entity. This horror film based on true events sent the average heart rate of viewers up to 84 beats per minute, with peaks of 129.

3. Insidious (2010)

Josh and Renai are a happy family who have just moved into a new home. However, it soon becomes apparent that something is wrong in the house: terrifying and unexplained events are piling up, all surrounding their young son Dalton. Average viewer heart rate? 85 beats per minute, with peaks of 133.

Author Ellison moves his family to the site of a gruesome murder to research his new book. When he finds a box of disturbing video footage in their new home, unexplained events quickly follow. This haunting tale sent viewers’ average heart rates soaring to 86 beats per minute, with peaks as high as 131.
