Meet the world's largest wooden city

In recent years, wooden buildings reached new heights. Think of the United Kingdom, where the tallest office building made of wood was recently completed, or Asia, where a university campus of over 45.000 square meters recently saw the light of day. Now it seems to be Sweden's turn. The company Atrium Ljungberg initiates Stockholm Wood City: the world's largest wooden city.

Stockholm Wood City will be built in the Sickla district and will contain 7.000 office spaces and 2.000 homes. “A lively, urban environment with a mix of workplaces, homes, restaurants and shops.” With a total area of ​​250.000 square meters, it has been described by the developer as the largest timber construction project in the world. 

Less stress, more productivity 

As you might expect, the city gets an organic look and feel through the material and a touch of the elegant scandinavian style. However, the project is about more than just aesthetics. Working with wood can shorten construction time and reduce the climate impact of buildings by up to 50 percent. Research also shows that wooden buildings improve air quality, reduce stress, increase productivity and store CO2. Sounds like music to your ears, doesn't it? With the emphasis on office spaces, the project is a way to compensate for the shortage of workplaces south of Stockholm's city center and in this way shorten people's travel times.

CEO of the company behind the city's development calls Wood City a historic milestone for Sweden's innovation capacity: "Stockholm Wood City manifests our future. There is a strong demand from tenants for innovative, sustainable solutions. A demand that we are responding to with this initiative." The company said the first sod is expected to be laid in 2025 and the first buildings are expected to be completed in 2027.
