The balance between shape and color

“For me, making art is like choosing a familiar route to an unknown final destination. The idea seems in advance crystal clear and simple to pursue. Afterwards it almost always turns out that the initial intention is only a starting point for creating something completely different. For me, art is therefore the noblest form of arbitrariness and distraction. When I start making a painting, the balance between form and color is the most important thing. Often it is only halfway through that the subject comes into view, if it reveals itself to me at all. When that does happen, it is a moment of palpable happiness.

I consciously show 'Skyline', a work in which the contours of a Buenos Aires revealed to me when I placed the ground plan. The painting shows a representation of the colors that the air, or 'sky', takes on in different types of weather and seasons, from typical Dutch gray skies to the sunset red that colors the sky on a summer evening. The photo below shows that the work hangs in the lounge of Hotel W in the golden morning light, in the background the Buenos Aires from Amsterdam. Randomness seems to come together here. Maybe it was meant to be?”

“In addition to free work, I also like to take on artistic assignments. In my customized work for the most beautiful interiors, I choose to collaborate with the customer's special wishes. It can be a luxurious be a work of art, as in this colorful diptych or a more subdued work that completes the space and its furnishings. As an autonomous artist, I find this bond and the associated challenge exciting and it drives me to discover new combinations and compositions.” “In addition to aesthetics, the integration of personal experiences, mottos or motivations of the client play a major role. As if it were a large puzzle, I try to pour form and function into an abstract mold with nods to reality. Above custom artwork was one of the first I made. This means it has a special place in my oeuvre. In this work I admire the bubble of love and security in the home situation of a young family, versus the hustle and bustle and uncertainties of the outside world.”

“My third work clearly shows the current development in my work. From an abstract style in which only geometric shapes and lines determined the composition, I now come to a formal language in which I mix geometry with organic shapes. My work now touches me, so to speak organized, especially now that I use less strict shapes. In this way of working I find a balance that is very natural: the organic and cultivated character of our environment are both reflected in this. The use of earthy tones and less bright colors contributes to the organic character of my most recent paintings. This is the first time that a work from my new field of work has been shown, so it is unique especially for MASTERS! With new energy and full of ideas, I am working towards a new solo exhibition in which the mix between forms will take center stage.”
