These are the five healthiest travel destinations
Wellness travel was already a trend in 2024, but this year it is truly gaining momentum. What are the healthiest travel destinations?
It was already a trend in 2024, but this year it seems to be really taking serious shape: wellness travel. Escape to places where both your mood and your blood values get a well-deserved boost. And guess what? These top destinations are less than a three-hour flight away. Before you even sip your first airplane aperitif, you'll already be sitting in the sun.
How did that conclusion come about? Holidu analyzed major cities worldwide on six health factors. Hours of sunshine per year were examined for vitamin D, while citrus fruit consumption provided insight into vitamin C intake. The country's level of happiness also played a role, as did meat, dairy and egg consumption as a measure of vitamin B12. In addition, air quality (oxygen) and sugar intake were included. Data came from the World Data Bank, IQ Air and the World Happiness Report, among others. Only cities with a complete dataset made it to the ranking.
5. Reykjavik | Iceland
The nature around Reykjavik is almost therapeutic. Volcanoes, hot springs and fresh ocean air provide relaxation and energy.
4. Madrid | Spain
Madrid mixes urban energy with a Mediterranean rhythm. The city is bathed in sunlight, good for your vitamin D levels. Add to that the Spanish cuisine, rich in olive oil, vegetables and lean proteins, and you have the ideal balance between enjoyment and healthy living
3. Helsinki | Finland
Helsinki exudes peace and balance. The city excels as a serotonin booster, with a population that happy and stress free seems to go through life. Finnish cuisine offers plenty of fish, poultry and berries – perfect for your immune system. Sun worshippers travel best in summer, when the days seem endless.
2. Stockholm | Sweden
The Swedish capital is known for its happy residents and fresh air. Stockholm scores high on the World Happiness Index, and you can feel it. Nature is literally on your doorstep, perfect for walks along the water or in the woods. The Scandinavian diet – full of fish, berries and whole grains – is good for your health. Summers are mild and sunny; ideal for that much-needed vitamin D.
1. Faro | Portugal
Faro tops the list as the healthiest holiday destination. The charming capital of the Algarve not only offers sun-drenched beaches, but also one of the lowest air pollution scores in Europe.
