Sliding street furniture
She studied at the Design Academy, but then set out into the wide world with her boyfriend Tonny Aerts, with whom she goes by the name Close Act makes street theater. But not now due to corona. And so Hesther Melief took up her old profession: design. This is how the Moving Bench was born, a rail with fifteen sliding colored chairs. The design comes from their experiences with street theater where they try to bring people into contact with each other. But you can just as easily move the chairs one and a half meters apart. By accident, their creation turned out to be corona-proof street furniture.
A new light on light
The 'Totem Lights' by Sabine Marcelis stand out because of a combination of neon light and transparent synthetic resin, which provides a special reflection. The polished blocks move around an axis, which also creates an interesting fragmentation of the light.
Safe and virus-free in one room
The virus that lingers in a public space and infects others: if it is up to Studio Roosegaarde, that will soon be a thing of the past. With the urban sun In early 2021, well-known designer Daan Roosegaarde will present a light installation that will make public spaces virus-free with special UV light. The installation emits UV-C light with a 222 nm wavelength. This type of light kills 99,9 percent of viruses and bacteria, including the coronavirus. At the same time, it would remain safe for human skin and eyes. Variants of UV-C light with a longer wavelength (254 nm) are already widely used to disinfect objects or space, including in hospitals. But people are not allowed to be present at the same time due to the health risks. With the 222 nm technology, an entire room can be put in 'disinfectant light' while people are present. The aim is to create public spaces where people can meet each other safely.
