From office building to high-end living at The Mayor

In Amstelveen, work is underway on the new construction project The Mayor. Construction company MJ De Nijs en Zonen is behind the development.

Entrepreneurship is in the blood here

The Mayor is certainly not the first project of MJ De Nijs and Zonen. The construction company was responsible for the restoration project of the old De Hallen tram depot, Hermitage museum and the construction of Eye Film Museum. Entrepreneurship is really in the blood here. This year, the company has been in the hands of the De Nijs family for no less than 100 years, so it is a real family business. To this day, the main management is still formed by members of the De Nijs family. Every member of the family is very involved in the projects and that makes for a nice place to work, says project developer Eltjo Hamster.

From office building to apartment buildings

The company likes a challenge. They do not undertake a large new construction project in an empty pasture. Instead, they opt for sustainable construction. They are mainly known for building and renovating in and around Amsterdam. These are often projects with limited space on and around the construction site, such as at The Mayor.

The former KPMG building is such a construction site. The office building was completed in 1991, but after eighteen years the company decided to move to a new office a few meters away. However, the building was never occupied again and has therefore been empty since 2009. MJ De Nijs en Zonen dared to do it and is now transforming the office building into a new apartment building with luxurious penthouses, apartments and park villas.

“This project actually fits completely with De Nijs' vision,” says project developer Eltjo Hamster. De Nijs is known for building inner-city, often complicated projects. “We see such logistical puzzles as a challenge. So it was not surprising that De Nijs, together with a number of investors, wanted to put their teeth into this project.”
