The truth behind Botox and fillers: myths and facts
As a cosmetic doctor, I regularly see raised eyebrows, both literally and figuratively, when the conversation turns to Botox and fillers. According to Frodo Gaymans of Amsterdam Clinic Doctor Frodo, there are many misunderstandings about this subject. For instance, is it true that preventive use of Botox at a young age can prevent wrinkles? Time to dispel a number of persistent myths.
Nowadays, with a swipe on your screen, you can undergo a complete makeover in no time. No wonder the number of cosmetic clinics has increased fivefold in the past ten years. This week, cosmetic doctor KNMG Frodo Gaymans takes a critical look at this rapid advance: aren't we going a bit too far in our search for perfection?
"As a cosmetic doctor, I often see raised eyebrows (both literally and figuratively) when the conversation turns to Botox and fillers. There is still a lot of misunderstanding about these treatments, fueled by persistent myths and misinformation. Time to debunk some of those myths and reveal the truth.
Myth: Start Botox Early
Many people think that preventive use of Botox at a young age can prevent wrinkles, but this is a myth. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that are responsible for expression lines. If you start using Botox at a young age, while there are no visible wrinkles yet, the effect is minimal and unnecessary. It is wiser to wait until there are actual signs of skin aging before you intervene. However, you can delay skin aging for longer by starting early with skin therapy and good care.
Fact: Everyone ages
You might think it’s obvious. Of course, everyone ages, but what many people don’t know is that as we age, our skull shrinks. This loss of bone volume contributes to sagging skin, especially around the eyes and jawline. This results in sagging skin. This is where fillers come in: they help to replenish lost volume and support the skin, helping you maintain a more youthful appearance.
Myth: Just try it, the fillers will wear off quickly!
What I often hear from younger clients is that they think both Botox and fillers are temporary solutions. Botox usually works for three to six months, while fillers can last six months to two years, depending on the type. Sometimes even much longer, depending on the type of filler, the skin and where it is injected. They break down gradually, causing the result to fade slowly. This means that clients do not suddenly return to their original look, but gradually notice changes. That is why good preparation and consultation by an honest doctor is very important! Otherwise you might end up with lips that are much too big for far too long.
Myth: Botox lips are everywhere
One of the most persistent misconceptions I hear is that Botox is used to fill lips. Nothing could be further from the truth! Botox relaxes muscles and is used to reduce wrinkles. Fillers, on the other hand, provide volume and are used to make lips fuller. Unfortunately, I see many fellow cosmetic doctors who are a bit too enthusiastic about the number of ml they inject into (increasingly younger) clients' lips. The lips must be in proportion to the rest of the face. Therefore, always choose a doctor who is honest and a treatment with a natural result!”
