Philip Haas lives and works on the Italian island of Procida in the Gulf of Naples. He was educated at Harvard University and taught at Princeton University. In 1991, Haas received a Guggenheim Fellowship. His movie Angels & Insects was nominated for a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award in 1997. At the Venice Film Festival The Butcher's Shop awarded the Premio Open, a prize for new works that bridge the gap between film and art.

Own visual vocabulary

With the exhibition Sculpture Breathes Life the museum in Amersfoort shows a wide selection of sculptures, reliefs, film installations, photo works, a performance video and a monumental painting. Philip Haas's work reflects a sensual and poetic dialogue with art history. Haas describes his creative process as sculpting by thinking and thereby creates its own and contemporary visual vocabulary. He mainly makes sculptures from marble, bronze, synthetic resin, plaster and wood. His best-known works include the critically acclaimed monumental sculptures Four Seasons (2010), inspired by paintings by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Four smaller versions of this can be seen. In addition, the ceiling video installation Apollo & the Continents (2009), based on the 18th century frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and the film installation The Butcher's Shop (2008) after a painting by Annibale Carracci. The sculptures on display are often tributes to famous artists such as Luis Buñuel, René Magritte and Vincent van Gogh.
