Arjan Kers on his favourite museums, hidden gems and the power of music
From mobility to design, from real estate to art, and from watchmaking to business services; at MASTERS EXPO you will be introduced to the latest innovations of special companies from more than 20 different sectors. But who are the driving forces behind these companies? MASTERS would like to introduce you and talk to Arjan Kers. He is in charge of TUI Netherlands and Belgium. Under his leadership, TUI grew into one of the largest travel organizations in our country. It will not raise any eyebrows when it turns out that the travel-loving CEO knows how to find all the hidden gems in the world…
What is your favorite museum and why?
''The National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City deeply touched me with its impressive collection. The rich history of pre-Columbian civilizations is truly fascinating. In addition, I recently had the privilege of visiting the Straat Museum in Amsterdam at the invitation of the Spanish Royal Family. The art and innovative approach of this museum were very inspiring.''
What book has made a big impression on you recently?
''The Bolle Gogh” touched me deeply. Despite its 880 pages, it is a compelling biography that describes his youth, studies, career in film and TV, and his complex relationships. It portrays him as an enfant terrible, provocateur, romantic, lover, father, son, brother, writer and director. The book also emphasizes the importance of freedom of expression, with the nuance that not everything needs to be said. A moving and impressive biography, written by Jaap Cohen.''
Do you have a favorite movie that you would recommend to everyone?
''The Shawshank Redemption” remains a timeless classic for me. The story of hope, friendship and perseverance continues to inspire and shows how powerful the human spirit can be.''
''My time in the Dominican Republic also made me appreciate Bachata, preferably with a good rum''
What is your favorite hotel and what makes it so unique?
''My work has taken me to many hotels around the world over the past 30 years, but for private vacations I prefer small-scale boutique hotels. Some of my favorites are La Casa que Canta in Zihuatanejo, La Valise in Tulum (both in Mexico), and Casa Palopo on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. These hotels offer a personal and intimate experience that I value highly.''
What is your favorite travel destination and what is the hidden gem here that tourists often miss?
''When visiting the culinary city of San Sebastián, a trip to the Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani is a must. Dedicated to Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chillida, this museum combines an indoor space with a beautiful 13-hectare sculpture park. The serene environment and impressive works of art are unforgettable.''
Which artist inspires you the most?
''During my stay in Lanzarote in the 90s, I discovered the work of César Manrique. This Spanish artist, painter, sculptor and architect seamlessly integrated art with nature. His projects, such as Mirador del Río, Jameos del Agua and the El Diablo restaurant in Timanfaya National Park, have made a lasting impression on me. His vision transformed the island and continues to inspire me.''
Who is your favorite artist and how does their music influence your daily life?
''My taste in music is versatile and depends on my mood and surroundings. I enjoy Andrea Bocelli during quiet moments and get energy from bands like Oasis, Nirvana and Guns N' Roses. I also cherish childhood memories of Dutch music and 80s hits like The Police and Madness. Because of my time in the Dominican Republic I also appreciate Bachata, preferably with a good rum.''
What is your favorite restaurant and what dish would you recommend there?
''Spanish cuisine has stolen my heart. When I'm at home in Las Palmas, I like to go to my favorite restaurant “Camino al Jamonal”. Here they serve authentic Canarian dishes such as “ensaladilla rusa caramelizada”, “ropa vieja” and “huevos rotos con jamón bellota”. Be sure to ask owner Miguel for advice on a matching wine.''
What is your favorite store and what do you buy there?
''During my working visits to our 140 travel agencies in the Netherlands, I like to stop at local entrepreneurs, butchers, bakers and farm shops. I really appreciate craftsmanship and enjoy the passion that craftsmen put into their work. Buying local products gives me a lot of satisfaction and strengthens my appreciation for traditional craftsmanship.''
