Online editorial: Fleur de JongIt seemed opportune to Mercedes-Benz to make their latest flagship available for test drives in the always sunny Palm Springs, in the California desert. More precisely: the famous Parker Hotel in Palm Springs. The eclectic five-star hotel with its beautiful palm tree gardens and many swimming pools was in the past the favorite hangout of celebrities such as Lauren Bacall, Gregory Peck, John Travolta and Barbra Streisand, but also Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Robert Downey Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Simpson like to come here. Today, however, we don't see anyone who could even remotely pass for a celebrity. That may also have to do with the weather, because it is raining and it is chilly. So chilly in fact that the wealthy residents, probably for the first time this year, have to put on a coat when they want to go shopping. However, we are here to work: in the navigation system of our Mercedes AMG EQS 53 has programmed a route of about 350 kilometers, which ends at The Strand House restaurant in the luxurious coastal town of Manhattan Beach.
Electric Drive
Well, AMG and pure electric driving... It seems like a strange combination. After all: you can recognize a real AMG from a mile away by its spoilers, air scoops and hammering eight- or twelve-cylinder engines. Electric cars, on the other hand, don't sound like anything and benefit from smooth skin to get as far as possible on a charge. Nothing for this tuning company of Mercedes-Benz models, you might say. Yet the opposite is true. Ten years ago, AMG released an electric variant of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG called Electric Drive. The production of this electric sports car was limited to a handful of copies and in retrospect you can say that it is a shame that they have been overtaken by Tesla cum suis in recent years, but who is going to make cars in 2013 for a market that is not yet there? is? Now, nine years later, that market is there and AMG is still relatively quick when it comes to sports car brands with the AMG EQS 53 4Matic. This super sedan can best be described as a thoroughly overhauled variant of the purely electric Mercedes EQS, which in turn is the technological flagship of Mercedes-Benz. There is no doubt that you are here aboard one of the most progressive cars of the moment. From our massage chairs we have a view of screens, control systems, futuristic materials and series of numbers projected in the window. In fact, the entire dashboard looks like one large screen.
