Special Guest

In recent months, the organizers have done everything they can to find a way to continue the annual film spectacle that all of Amsterdam looks forward to. And that way has been found. In a hybrid form, consisting of online and physical activities. The IDFA team and Cinekid, among others, have joined forces and developed a smart film platform. The main guest of 2020 has also been announced with appropriate pride: the Italian director Gianfrance Rosi. He is one of the first directors to receive the most important prize at an A-list festival twice for a documentary.

IDFA Online

Because the number of people in a theater remains limited, IDFA will offer many options online. IDFA will kick off on Wednesday evening, November 18, with an online opening ceremony. After each online documentary, an interview with the filmmaker or a short one is shown Q&A, where it is possible to ask short questions to the filmmaker or main character. You can also register online talks, panels en meetings to attend. The online documentaries start weekdays from 14.00:23.00 PM to 10.00:XNUMX PM. On weekends you can get there early, from XNUMX a.m.

IDFA in the theaters

Do you experience IDFA best from a comfortable chair in the theater? In Amsterdam you can attend more than 18 premieres at Eye and Pathé Tuschinski between November 25 and 150. Furthermore, from November 18 to December 6, IDFA extended will take place in De Balie, Ketelhuis, Kriterion and Rialto in Amsterdam and in 40 other theaters throughout the Netherlands: a strong selection of six films with a socially urgent message.

IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary

Eight world premieres together form the IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary. This selection includes titles from emerging as well as established filmmakers from documentary cinema and it will be interesting to see who can join the top of 2020.

1. 100UP

Heddy Honigmann visits seven people over the age of 100 to find out what they think about life. What are their expectations and have they had a happy life? Each person tells his or her story in their own way: with tears, humor or wisdom. Despite the loss of their loved ones, the illnesses they have overcome and the ticking clock, they are all full of positivity in life.

2.Bruce

After years in boarding schools and prison, Bruce (27) is free. As a child he was neglected by his drug-addicted parents and this left deep wounds in the twenty-somethings. For the first time in his life, Bruce reflects his habits, behavior and feelings. He visits his father and travels to his family abroad. His goal: to come to terms with both himself and his family.

3. Dealing with Death

As a white woman, funeral manager Anita delves into the farewell rituals of different cultures in the Bijlmer. The many cultures all have their own ritual surrounding the farewell to the dead. She must map out the wishes for a new funeral home in Amsterdam South-East. Everything Anita sees raises doubts about death and the aspects that come with it. This documentary follows Anita for more than five years and shows the contrasts of all communities and cultures and their ways of grieving.
