A fascinating phenomenon in Denmark

In the marshes of Southwest Jutland in Denmark, a fascinating phenomenon takes place every spring and autumn: hundreds of thousands of starlings converge there during their migration, forming gigantic formations in the air and producing movements comparable to a dance. Text: Bart-jan Brewer

INK DRAWING IN THE AIR

This phenomenon forms the basis of Søren Solkær's 'Black Sun' project. “Sometimes the swarm seems to possess the power of a superfluid, changing shape in an endless stream: from geometric to organic, from solid to liquid, from matter to ethereal, from reality to dream… An exchange in which time ceases to exist and the birds are steeped in mysticism,” says the Danish photographer. “That's the moment I'm trying to capture: a fragment of eternity.” He has brought together his photos, all visual poems, ink drawings in the sky, in the book Black Sun (also the name by which this phenomenon is known, because starlings darken the sky). Søren Solkaer is represented in the Netherlands by Vroom & Varossieau.
