Image: Robin Trajano | Ferrari North America, Inc.Ferrari has released many new cars in the past year. Each with their own specialties or expands the capabilities of its predecessor. But the just-released Roma is perhaps the most exciting of them all, as it establishes a whole new bloodline within the Ferrari family. Ferrari calls the Roma a 2+ coupe and takes on the role of a luxury GT in the classic Ferrari tradition. The name tells a story that the creators describe as la nuova dolce vita – 'the new sweet life'. Particularly interesting is the shark-nose front, with a unique perforated grille – also in body color – that enhances the holistic shape. At a time when most brands are desperate for identity with increasingly excessive and undignified grilles, the Roma shows how good design can be achieved.

The surface of the hood is not disturbed by vents and the body has no flaps or fins. Narrow LED headlights, complemented by thin taillights at the rear, provide illumination without distracting from the overall appearance. Under the deep boot lid is a prominent rear diffuser, which on the Blu Corsa car – as brilliant as a morpho butterfly – was carbon fibre, a €9.950 option, one of many niceties that added a significant €92.314 in options to the base price of €184.215. With destination charges and before sales tax, the Roma offers a €279.689 taste of 'the new sweet life'. The designers call the interior layout 'integrated architecture', another way of saying that it all flows together very nicely and the creates the illusion of two cockpits: one for the driver and one for the passenger. Ferrari has always been at the forefront of creating the most beautiful cockpits, thanks in large part to its steering wheel design – incorporating lessons learned from F1 motorsport – that keeps the driver's eyes on the road and not on the dashboard.

Roma delivers a high-quality driving experience that is always entertaining without becoming tiring, and the design ensures that its classic aesthetic always remains in style. Others may have bolder shapes, more power or wilder interiors, but as a complete package the Roma offers a taste of the new sweet life indeed.
