5x exhibitions worth a visit

New figures show that people with a museum card made no less than 9.5 million museum visits last year; an absolute record and a significant increase compared to 2022, when the number of visits was 7.1 million. The following exhibitions prove once again why a museum visit should not be missing from your list of things to do this year...

The Porcelain Body | Museum JAN

The work of Lisa Konno (1992) is colorful, innovative and striking. Cultural identity and craft are two important pillars. From February 14 to June 16, 2024, Museum JAN is organizing an exhibition dedicated to the artist's work in which Japanese porcelain is combined with textiles. In this way, Konno reflects on beauty ideals, both in Japan and the Netherlands. When is a search for beauty a liberating form of self-expression and when does it turn into a form of oppression? 

On Sharp | Central Museum Utrecht 

America, late sixties. A group of young artists rebel against the dominant movement of abstract art and focus on accurately painting everyday scenes, using photographs as inspiration. This is how photorealism, also known as hyperrealism, is born. In the exhibition that can be seen until June 9, the Centraal Museum celebrates the beauty and craftsmanship of this art movement.

MOØDe | Cobra Museum 

Until May 12, the fashion world can be admired through the lens of Anton Corbijn in the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen. In MOØDe photographs are presented from his extensive oeuvre (between 1979 – 2023) in which he explores the crossover between portrait photography and the fashion world. Corbijn embraces the terms 'mood' and 'fashion' in the broadest sense. Expect more than 200 of his most successful photos, including Kate Moss, Alexander McQueen and Naomi Campbell.

Rembrandt's four senses | Museum De Lakenhal 

Museum De Lakenhal is blowing out 150 candles this year. The museum celebrates this with the presentation of Rembrandt's very first paintings. A special occasion, because it is the first time that the paintings can be seen together in Leiden: the city where Rembrandt was born, received his first painting training and took his first steps as an artist. The masterpieces can be admired here until June 16. 

Dialect | Foam

Amsterdam's Foam is showing the solo exhibition until May 1 dialect by Felipe Romero Beltrán, a Colombian photographer based in Paris. Beltrán, known for his in-depth approach to social issues, received international recognition and won several prizes, such as the Kbr Photo Award last year, the ParisPhoto Curiosa Section and the Aperture Portfolio Prize in 2022. For the exhibition at Foam, he documented the lives of a group of Moroccan migrants awaiting a residence permit after their arrival from a dangerous journey overseas.
