Urban nature

How to create more green space in a built-up city? By taking to the air Following in the footsteps of New York's High Line Park, created on a disused freight railroad line, Rotterdam is coming up with Luchtpark Hofbogen: a park on the roof of the former Hofplein Station.Text: Bart-jan Brouwer
Online editing: Noa Verseveldt

Picnicking over the city

It is a green oasis that includes an events area, fruit orchard, botanical garden, play dike and a view of the Rotterdam skyline. Catering and retail establishments are located in the arches under the roof. The aerial park is the starting point of the 1.9 kilometer long former Hofbogen train viaduct. By the end of 2024, it should be possible to walk from the center to the A20. And Hofbogen will be more than just a city park; it must become a "nature-inclusive and climate-adaptive landscape at height. The park will have a smart and circular water system that will collect and process precipitation and reduce flooding. Greenery will also help improve air quality and increase biodiversity in the city.

LXRY LIST 2022

The annual book LXRY List 2022 casts a glance into the distance, where new opportunities shine. Entrepreneurship with a view to a better world. For example, Rewilding Europe is committed to helping disappearing species by making space for true wild nature. And De Apostelhoeve is taking advantage of global warming by growing wine on the hills of Limburg and gaining international recognition for it. In addition to these burgeoning economies, there is also a focus on sustainable initiatives. Like Cartier's new Tank Must, a watch that runs on solar energy. And a lamp against light pollution. But the list also includes an over-the-top hotel stay at Château Versailles. Après nous, le déluge? No, but even in the new world there may be room to enjoy and experience.
