Singapore 2100: the city of the future

Today, the world is increasingly facing natural disasters, which will only increase as the impact of climate change grows. However, architectural firm WOHA reminds us that there is still hope to turn the tide with a design for a future city where humans and nature can coexist. Text: Fleur de Jong

Multi-purpose rooms

WOHA is a Singapore-based architecture firm that has now gained worldwide recognition for its innovative and influential designs. WOHA's goal in every design is to improve the daily lives of city dwellers while protecting them from the effects of climate change.

In a video, WOHA presents Singapore 2100: seeing a resilient, sustainable and future city where people and nature can coexist in self-sustaining circular systems. For example, dedicated spaces for working, playing or living are replaced by multifunctional spaces. According to the design, work and education will no longer be desk-bound, but flexible and adaptable. The new city will also provide amenities that inspire citizens to stay active and spend time in nature.

Navigating the city three-dimensionally

Singapore 2100 is a 50/50 city, this means that half of the area is used for nature and half for urban space. This creates a balance between natural and artificial systems. The main purpose of the natural space is to bring biodiversity back to the city.

In the area of mobility, the use of public transportation modes will be encouraged, reducing the use of private vehicles. Highways and other urban connections will be moved to a lower underground level. The plan is to navigate the city three-dimensionally: above ground, below ground and by air. Using different layers will maximize the efficient use of surface area.

The video shows what Singapore 2100 should look like according to WOHA. Whether the city will ever be realized remains to be seen, the design is at least impressive....JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjI3MDAlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjI0MTUlMjIlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbSUyRmVtYmVkJTJGWE5zSDBXcTI2Qm8lMjIlMjB0aXRsZSUzRCUyMllvdVR1YmUlMjB2aWRlbyUyMHBsYXllciUyMiUyMGZyYW1lYm9yZGVyJTNEJTIyMCUyMiUyMGFsbG93JTNEJTIyYWNjZWxlcm9tZXRlciUzQiUyMGF1dG9wbGF5JTNCJTIwY2xpcGJvYXJkLXdyaXRlJTNCJTIwZW5jcnlwdGVkLW1lZGlhJTNCJTIwZ3lyb3Njb3BlJTNCJTIwcGljdHVyZS1pbi1waWN0dXJlJTIyJTIwYWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuJTNFJTNDJTJGaWZyYW1lJTNF
