ON A WORLD TOUR OF ART

Suzanne Swarts' knowledge of art goes far beyond what can be admired within the walls of 'her' Voorlinden. In MASTERS, the museum director shares her insights, experiences and passion in an almost poetic way. Works of art in themselves!

Suzanne: "Just before we reopened our doors, I took a final walk through the empty halls of Voorlinden. I walked past the wall with nearly a hundred giant lightweight pans of Maha Malluh, their bottoms covered with the black velvet of thousands of meals. Originally Bedouins trekked with them through the heat of the desert, the aluminum pots strapped to the backs of their camels. Looking at their bottoms, I suddenly find myself in their company, sitting by their nightly campfire. I realize how much I have missed this: to feel how art lets me travel through times and cultures. Similarly, I imagine myself in another place when I stand in front of Lara Favaretto's landscape of multicolored cubes, held together without a drop of glue. They are made of leftover scraps from Italian paper mills. As I walk past the blocks, I can hear the rain of festive confetti raining down Mediterranean streets and alleyways in their crackle.

Suddenly there I am, in the midst of a vibrant pressure cooker of countries, cultures, customs and encounters. Not for nothing have we christened our latest exhibition Rendez-Vous: in these halls we celebrate the reunion between Voorlinden and its visitors, between art and viewers, and between artists and their works among themselves. In this selection from our collection, artworks come together as lovers, embracing and strengthening each other. Their stories give each other more charge and meaning. They put both feet back on the ground and make me curious about the journey visitors will take in our museum in the coming months. Because this is how I prefer to see art: as an exciting discovery of a new world, in which I can lose myself completely. The boundaries to my imagination are open again. I am allowed to travel again. I am allowed again."
