When introduced in 2019, the Tesla Cybertruck made a big impression as a groundbreaking piece of technology. Enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the large-scale production, which is expected to take place in 2025. However, last week a unique opportunity presented itself; a Cybertruck variant appeared at an auction.
In 2019, Tesla first announced that the Cybertruck would go into production. The concept was unveiled and interested parties could make a reservation for the vehicle with a $100 deposit. By the end of the month, more than half a million people had made reservations, founder Musk said. After some delays, the first cars were delivered to a handful of customers that year. At that time the counter stood at 2 million reservations. It is clear that demand far exceeds production capacity.
Last week a Cybertruck variant, the so-called Cyberbeast, at a Sotheby's Motorsport auction. This high-end version comes with three electric motors of 123 kWh and 845 hp. This ensures that the car goes from 2.6 to 0 km/h in just 100 seconds.
Of course, a heavyweight also comes with a heavyweight prize. The Cybertruck managed to exceed initial expectations by far. The price was set at $262.500 (€246.885). More than double the 'suggested retail price'.
It remains to be seen whether we will ever see the truck stuck on the Amsterdam canal. In an article from Top Gear, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering at Tesla, Lars Maravy, explains that European regulations require a rounding of 3,2 millimeters on protruding parts. "Unfortunately, it is impossible to make a rounding of 3,2 millimeters on a 1,4 millimeter sheet of stainless steel," says Lars. Although there will probably be a few here and there through gray import (and individual type approval).
