Meet the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic

With the new EQS AMG, the Germans have launched a stunning limousine that combines heavenly comfort with even more power and sportiness. We push the power pedal hard around the luxurious desert city of Palm Springs.Text: Erik Kouwenhoven

Online Editor: Fleur de JongIt seemed opportune for Mercedes-Benz to make their latest flagship available for test drives in the always sunny Palm Springs, in the California desert. More precisely: the famed Parker Hotel in Palm Springs. The eclectic five-star hotel with its beautiful palm tree gardens and numerous pools was in the past the favorite hangout of celebrities such as Lauren Bacall, Gregory Peck, John Travolta and Barbra Streisand, as well as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Robert Downey Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Simpson. Today, however, we don't see anyone who could even remotely pass for a celebrity. That may also have something to do with the weather, as it is raining and chilly. So chilly, in fact, that the wealthy residents, probably for the first time this year, have to put on a coat when they want to go shopping. We, however, are here to work: a route of some 350 kilometers has been programmed into the navigation system of our Mercedes AMG EQS 53, ending at The Strand House restaurant in the upscale coastal town of Manhattan Beach.

Electric Drive

Well, AMG and pure electric driving... It seems a strange combination. After all: a real AMG can be recognized from miles away by its spoilers, air vents and hammering eight- or twelve-cylinder engines. Electric cars, on the other hand, sound like nothing and benefit from an eel-smooth skin to get as far as possible on a charge of prick. Nothing for this tuning company of Mercedes-Benz models, you might say. Yet the opposite is true. Ten years ago, AMG already released an electric version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG called Electric Drive. The production of this electric sports car was limited to a handful of units, and in hindsight you can say that it's a pity that they allowed themselves to be overtaken in recent years by Tesla cum suis, but in 2013, who is going to make cars for a market that is not yet there? Now, nine years later, that market does exist, and when it comes to sports car brands, AMG is still relatively quick at it with the AMG EQS 53 4Matic. This super-sedan is best described as a substantially underpowered version of the purely electric Mercedes EQS, and that in turn is Mercedes-Benz's technological flagship. That you are here aboard one of the most advanced cars of the moment is beyond doubt. From our massage seats, we have a view of screens, control systems, futuristic materials and numerical sequences projected in the window. Indeed, the entire dashboard looks like one big screen.
