Richard Lamain, artist

Self-taught artist Richard Lamain has established himself at MASTERS Gallery with his striking works. In his minimalist work, clean lines and surfaces, with at most a few colors, are perfectly matched. His inspiration comes from geometry, architecture and "urbex": old abandoned buildings.Text: Larissa Schaule Jullens

TSSL 64

"A work constructed with hand-cut geometric shapes and half cubes of FSC certified or recycled paper with a canvas-like structure. Art in which I strive for perfection, but also rhythm. The work that is in constant motion throughout the day through the play of light and shadow. This characterizes my art and can be found in everything. I can be busy for hours, then forget about the world around me. It sometimes seems like a form of meditation. Regularly the comparison is made between the reliefs of Jan Schoonhoven and zero or zero art. A nice quote from this artist who died in 1994:

Zero is primarily a new conception of reality in which the individual role of the artist is reduced to a minimum. The Zero artist merely chooses, isolates parts of reality (materials as well as ideas derived from reality) and shows them in the most neutral way. Accepting things as they are and not changing them for personal reasons, only making changes if necessary to show reality in a more intense way."

Nomads II

"Like nomads who travel around and have no fixed abode, the work is freely constructed and has no framework, no boundaries. With this pyramidal style, I indulge myself and am constantly searching for the perfect composition. During this process, I also find new inspiration and things can suddenly fall by the wayside. Then I have an idea for a certain shape and I want to focus on that completely first."

Vanilla

"A beautiful, small and soft work, hence the name Vanilla. This time not full, dense shapes, but overlapping cut-out shapes made of cardboard. I bring them slightly up in height, therefore they don't have that very robust 3D character. Often these kinds of creations are again an intermediate phase or can be seen as "test works. This in turn creates shapes that I can apply later, so these could be very important keys."
