The Dutch pavilion at the World Expo in Dubai 2021, called The Dutch Biotope, will have an energy-generating roof made of colored solar cells, a design by Marjan van Aubel. The panels are not only modular but also circular and made of organic materials, which is rare for solar panels. They feature a graphic design that, like stained glass, creates beautiful light and color projections in the pavilion. Like being in a giant modern church. The panels are made of PET, which makes them featherweight and therefore easy to transport: when finished, they are disassembled and reused elsewhere.
The more than 500 solar cells in this poetic chandelier are cut in the shape of four different species of butterflies fluttering around a glass light source. To effectively collect, purify and distribute excess rainwater in the near future, Jólan van der Wiel designs urban installations. In "Micro Water Structures," he examines how we can anticipate the expected water problems and playfully depicts a hopeful solution, including by integrating fountains and swimming areas. The installation, which assumes a symbiosis between rainwater and architecture, should function as a conversation piece and make our dealings with water and with our ecosystem negotiable. Micro Water Structures also shows what role design can play in solving ecologically-related problems.
