Special Guest

Over the past few months, organizers have been pulling out all the stops to find a way to keep the annual film spectacle that all of Amsterdam looks forward to going ahead. And that way has been found. In hybrid form, of course, consisting of online and physical activities. The IDFA team and Cinekid, among others, have joined forces and together have developed a smart film platform. With appropriate pride, the chief guest of 2020 has also been announced: Italian director Gianfrance Rosi. He is one of the first directors to receive the main prize at an A-list festival twice for a documentary.

IDFA Online

Because the number of people in a theater remains limited, IDFA will offer many opportunities online. Wednesday evening, Nov. 18, IDFA kicks off with an online opening ceremony. After each online documentary, an interview with the filmmaker will be shown or a short Q&A, where it will be possible to ask short questions to the filmmaker or main character. You can also sign up to attend online talks, pannels and meetings. The online documentaries start weekdays fromad 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.. On weekends, you can get there early, starting at 10:00 am.

IDFA in theaters

Do you experience IDFA best from a comfortable seat in the theater? In Amsterdam, you can attend more than 150 premieres at Eye and Pathé Tuschinski between November 18 and 25. Furthermore, from November 18 to December 6, IDFA extended will take place in De Balie, Ketelhuis, Kriterion and Rialto in Amsterdam and in 40 other theaters throughout the Netherlands: a rock-solid selection of six films with a socially urgent message.

Ticket sales begin on Thursday, Nov. 9. Be quick, as tickets are expected to sell out in no time. Order your IDFA 2020 tickets here.

IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary

Eight world premieres make up the IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary. Titles by both emerging and established filmmakers of documentary cinema are part of this selection, and it will be a matter of who gets to join the top of 2020.

1. 100UP

Heddy Honigmann visits seven people over 100 to find out how they feel about life. What are their expectations and have they had a happy life? Each person tells their story in their own way: with a tear, humor or wisdom. Despite the loss of their loved ones, overcoming illnesses and the ticking clock, each of them is full of positivity in life.

2. Bruce

After years of living in boarding schools and prison, Bruce (27) is free. Neglected as a child by his drug-addicted parents, it has left deep wounds on the twenty-something. For the first time in his life, Bruce reflects on his habits, behavior and feelings. He visits his father and travels to his family abroad. His goal: to come to terms with both himself and his family.

3. Dealing with Death

Funeral director Anita dives into the farewell rituals of different cultures in the Bijlmer as a white woman. The many cultures all have their own rituals surrounding the parting of the dead.
