The soccer player scored both of Argentina's goals, helping the team to their 2-1 victory. Maradona, against the rules, used his hand to tip the ball over goalkeeper Peter Shilton to score. However, the referee thought Maradona had used his head and declared the goal valid. After the game, Maradona declared that his goal was "a little bit of Maradona's head, and a little bit of God's hand. It became one of the most famous statements in sports.

The second goal during this match against England is considered one of the most beautiful during a World Cup. It was later even declared by FIFA as the goal of the century.

Great cultural significance

After the match and Argentina's victory, English player Steve Hodge asked Maradona to change shirts. Steve Hodge mentions in a statement that it was an absolute privilege for him to have played against one of the greatest and most magnificent footballers of all time. Hodge also says that the Hand of God-shirt has great cultural significance to the soccer world and that he is sure the new owner will be immensely proud already of owning the world's most iconic soccer shirt.

At the Sotheby's auction in London, the shirt ended up fetching about 8.8 million euros. This also makes it the most expensive sports item ever auctioned. The record holder so far was Babe Ruth's baseball shirt, which was previously auctioned for about 5.2 million euros. Who is the buyer of the iconic Hand of God shirt is unknown.
